Friends Walking for the Cure 2006 |
| History of Our Team Komen Foundation · Team Profiles Race Day 2006 |
Well that time of year has already come and passed-- time to get our team together to participate in the Komen Race for the Cure®. The race this year was held in Linn Park in downtown Birmingham, Alabama and celebrated its 15th year! (Click here to see a map of where the race was held.) Our team (Friends Walking for the Cure) celebrated our third year of participation! We were proud to be a part of this event and The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation© (the "Komen Foundation") is close to our all of our hearts for many reasons.
Our team started participating in this worth-while charity through the efforts of one
employee, Nancy Routson (pictured right). She was diagnosed with breast cancer in August 2003.
Because of her chemotherapy treatments, she was too ill to participate in the 2003 Race for the Cure.
But cancer didn't stop Nancy! She decided to get a team of co-workers together in 2004 and that was just the beginning.
Every year since 2004, she has gotten our team (a/k/a Friends Walking for the Cure) together to join the fight.
Her story and her battle with (and victory over) breast cancer has inspired several co-workers to get involved with this charity
and join the fight against this disease year after year.
The Komen Foundation was founded on the promise made between sisters (Susan "Suzy" Goodman Koman and Nancy Goodman Brinker). When Suzy was diagnosed in 1978 with breast cancer, there was little known about this disease. Suzy asked her sister to do anything and everything she could to stop breast cancer. To keep her promise to her sister Suzy, Nancy Goodman Brinker established The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in 1982 in her sister's memory. The Komen Foundation has been in the fight against breast cancer for more than 20 years through:
