Where Are We? |

The Duhallow (land of two rivers) country lies in the undulating fertile countryside of North Cork, astride the river Blackwater. It is borderede in the south by the Boggeragh and Nagle Mountains where the Muskerry & United Hunts adjoin; to the north-east are the Ballyhoura Mountains beyond which lie the Scarteen and Tipperary; to the north is the grassland of Limerick, & the boundary westwards could, in theory, be the Atlantic coastline in Kerry as there is no hunt in between, but hounds have rarely hunted west of the line Newmarket to Banteer. In this corner of County Cork there has been established a great sporting tradition of foxhunting, across a countryside which is renowned to be one of the most challenging in Ireland. It is a countryside which has raised horses & horsemen whose fame has spread far beyond the confines of the province of Munster.
The Duhallow country is one of great variety, big & open, wild in parts but fair. To the western side the enclosures are big, formidable 'hairy' banks with wide ditches on either side, the going is often deep; stamina is at a premium as it generally carries a good scent. On the eastern and southern side the land is lighter, the going drier with mostly narrow single banks, often stone faced & little growth on them. The visitor who described negotiating of the Duhallow banks as; 'six foot up & twelve foot down' was being a trifle colourful, but his sentiments can be appreciated when he said, 'Tis no wonder you all go to Church on Sundays if you have to face that country during the week'!
