Flesh Collection |
The Duhallow Hunt feed their hounds almost entirely from the carcasses of fallen farm stock and horses. The meat is fed raw, on the bone, with backbones removed to adhere to regulations resulting from BSE. Because of those regulations it is now quite unviable to feed sheep to the hounds. All waste is burned in the incinerator and no ash or offal leaves the premises.
The flesh collection services is carried out on virtually all non-hunting days except for Sundays. The hunt is also on call twenty four hour a day, seven day a week for emergencies.
The service is invaluable to farmers particularly since the only knacker yard shut down in 2000. There is no other local alternative except for the local meat factory which will charge for the service.
The hunt incinerator cost £8,500 and was installed in 1999. It has an life expectancy of eight years. It is envisaged that the running costs of the incinerator, to include maintenance, depreciation and fuel will run to £8,500 per annum. This does not include the very high vehicle costs or that of staff's time. The expenditure is borne entirely by the hunt.
Anybody wishing for the hunt to collect any fallen stock should contact Michael Buckley at the kennels on 022 21252.

Under the BSE Monitoring, which apply from 1st July 2001, any keeper or owner of a bovine animal aged over 30 months found dead on a holding or in transit is required to notify the death to our appointed agent, Animal Handling Facilities Ltd, within 24hrs of death or of the carcase coming into his possession or charge. Failure to notify within 24 hours is an offence under the regulations.
Animal Handling Facilities Ltd will arrange for the carcase to be collected and taken for sampling and testing for BSE. The results of the test will contribute towards an Ire.-wide programme which aims to provide a greater understanding of levels of BSE. Similarly BSE testing programmes are being undertaken in other EU Member States.
