Week 1 featured the Saints taking on the Raiders in New Orleans.

It took the Saints 2 plays to score off the opening kickoff, a bomb to Marv Cook, and a short run by Bailey. After the Raiders were forced to punt the Saints went back to work and scored on two more plays, both runs by Bailey, putting the Saints up 14-0. It got worse as a fumbled kickoff was recovered by Bob Golic who took it in for the score making it 35-7 at the half.

The Raiders scored on two long plays, one a run by Ottis Anderson and the other a bomb to Curtis Duncan. Dan Marino threw his first interception of the season, an errant pass intended for a wide open Marv Cook.
