HSTL Summary Page

The Bears recieved the kickoff, and with Steve DeBerg at the helm went to work. DeBerg hit Mark Bavaro with a 31 yard pass on 2cnd down and 10, putting the ball at the 50. Earnest Byner brought the Bears to the New Orleans 26 yard line, where the offense stalled. Faced with a 4th and 2, Tecmo J decided to go for it. Saints linebacker David Little pressured DeBerg on a rollout, who at the last second delivered a perfect strike to Byner who took it in from 26 yards, making the Saints drones look foolish.

Derrick Fenner took the opening kick for N.O. two yards deep in his endzone, and bowling over many a Bear, took the ball back to the Chicago 40. Dan Marino hit Mark Ingram on a 16 yard pass to the 24, and Johnny Bailey took the ball to the 9 on the next play. On 1st down Marino hit Ingram in the endzone, but Ingram couldn't hang on. On 2cnd down Marino had the same problem when he hit Anthony Miller in the numbers who was standing between two Bears, but dropped the ball. On third down Bailey had an open path to the endzone but was stopped on the goal line. On a crucial 4th and 2 Bailey once again was snuffed.

The Bears took over and after a long drive that ended at the Saints 14, the Bears Dean Biassucci kicked a field goal that looked wide but bounced off the post.

Down 10-0 the Saints mounted another drive that featured a 51-yard run by Johnny Bailey. Marino hit Bailey in the endzone for the td a few plays later.

The Saints took the opening 2cnd half kickoff and went nowhere with it. On 4th and 13 from their own 33 yard line, Dan Marino threw desperately to Anthony Miller standing in triple coverage. The ball fell incomplete. Chicago's next possesion featured repeated passes from Steve DeBerg to Stephone Paige, the final one putting Chicago up 17-7.

The Saints refused to give up thoguh, and after some incredible running by Johnny Bailey, the Saints cut the lead to 17-14 and got the ball back with a mere 2:40 seconds in the game left following some fantastic defense by Mark Robinson and Chuck Cecil which forced the Bears to go three and out. Once again the Saints went back to Johnny Bailey and once again he delivered. With the Saints facing a 3rd down and 13, Bailey dashed for a huge gain but was injured on the play. This was the deciding factor, as the Bears knew that the Saints only hope lay on the shoulders of Dan Marino. Marino was not up to the task, and three consecutive picked plays later, he was laying on the turf picking isotoners out of his bodily crevaces.
