Religion in Spain

In a country that has over 50% of its population practicing the Catholic religion, we found the primary correlating Hofstede Dimension to be Uncertainty Avoidance (UAI). There were only 2 countries out of 23 that did not follow this correlation, they were Ireland and the Philippines.

Roman catholicism is the largest religion in the country. According to several sources (Spanish official polls and others), about 76% [ citation needed ] self-identify as Catholics, about 2% [citation needed ] with another religious faith, and about 19% identify with no religion. Many Spaniards do not participate regularly in religious services. A study conducted in October 2006 by the Spanish Centre of Sociological Investigations shows that of the Spaniards who identify themselves as religious, 54% hardly ever or never go to church, 15% go to church some times a year, 10% some time per month and 19% every Sunday or multiple times per week.

According to the most recent Eurobarometer poll 2005 ,

  • 59% of Spanish citizens responded that "they know there is a God" .
  • 21% answered that "they know there is some sort of spirit or life force" .
  • 18% answered that "they do not know there is any sort of spirit, God, or life force yet" .
