The Calculus behind U + ME = US by Jewels
You've probably heard the great, great song by teh "fake" boyband 2ge+her entitled Calculus (U + ME = US). If you haven't, you're missing out on a very interesting song. The concept seems simple...U + ME = US. But how is this possible? At first i'm thinking, "Ok, easy...ME must equal S," but then i realized...one side is addition, one is multiplication. So my initial thought was shattered into pieces, and i almost gave up. Then yesterday, the universal motivator who I personally like to call Austiny reminded me (unintentionally) of the group and their song. So i thought about it some more.
U + ME = US therefore...
U + ME = US ----> U + ME = S Therefore....
U U U
U + ME = S Therefore...
U U
1 + ME = S
U
So that's what S equals, and obviously it depends on the values of U and ME. U and ME are what determine what S will be. Just U and ME, baby. Hehe.
Now, assume that U equals one. Then 1 + ME = S. If U = 0, then S = undefnied (infinity) plus one. That is meaningless. Also, if you plug 0 in as U in the original, then it's just ME. Just ME alone is almost insignificant. You don't even know what are the variables in the equation, but for beneficiary purposes, we shall assume that U is a variable, and ME are any constants.
But what is the relavence of this? Anything good? Where's the calculus part? First, take the derivative of the original equation.
U + ME = US Therefore...
d(U + ME) = d (US) Therefore...
du du
1 + 0 = S
Well, this confirms that S = 1. Now take that last equation...
1 + ME = S Therefore....
U
d (1+ ME) = d (S) Therefore...
du U   du
0 + (U*0)-(ME*1) = 0 , U is not equal to 0
U^2
So we have this, and simplified we get:
0 + (0 - ME) = 0, since if a fraction equals zero, then the numerator must equal 0 (if the denominator equaled 0, then the fraction would be undefinied).
This, simplified, is simply -ME = 0. So either M = 0 or E = 0. What does that tell you? ME alone is zero. Nothing. Nadda.
U alone has the potential to be 0. However, if U was indeed 0, the whole equation would flop.
There you have it people. U + ME = US...the happy equation, not so simple to handle.
