MY RANTS / THOUGHTS:
My Crafty Duck Ego Experiment:
I decided to do a little experiment after the Ducks (2002) Fiesta Bowl. I wanted to test the Duck fans, see if my description of them was right. I put 4 fresh 5 dollar bills into my pocket. I knew of four people, Duck fans, I would encounter that day. If they didn't mention the Ducks win right when I saw them, and talked about something else, I would give them a 5. If they 'rubbed' in right when they saw me (frankly I don't care about the game), they would lose their 5 dollar bill and hear it from me.
First person of the day. Walks in the door and says, "What was the score of the Duck game sucka? I forgot..." I chuckled to myself. Oh boy...how did I know that was going to happen. I let him hear it, told of my plan, and told him this is exactly why I dislike the Ducks. Because of people like you.
Here comes number two. Walks up, punches me in the shoulder, and says, "Sooo, bitch. The Ducks suck? I don't see your Beavers winning a big game like that!" I laugh again. This time I walk away just laughing, the Duck fan trying to process in his frail brain what happened. Plus, Beavers won 41-9 last year, in the SAME game, which just so happens to be a bigger margin. Moving on...
Number three. I thought for a second she would talk about something else. "It was good weather...for the Ducks to kick ass. So they weren't going to win?" Sigh. Why do I have to be so right? 'No 5 for you'.
Last person. So far, I had given away no dollars. He was the last hope. But first thing I saw him, he started rambling in egotisical Duck fan talk, too incoherent to write. I left him so he could mumble to himself about the glorious BCS.
Later on I asked myself, 'did I really wanted to give away 20 bucks?' I am normally very tight with my money, but for some reason I knew I wouldn't lose any. Because we were talking about Duck fans here people, and they are very predictable. And on how they lost to Stanford they replied, "Man that was cheap. The Ducks were screwed by the refs that game." Why did I know they would say that???
My Thoughts on Next Season (2004):
Beavers:
@LSU- Beavers hang with the Tigers until halftime, but LSU pulls away.
@Boise State- Beavers come into Boise slightly beaten up, but find themselves playing a rebuilding BSU team not at the same level as last year. After playing LSU in Tiger Stadium, the Smurf turf and Broncos seem much easier. Beavers win a close one.
Vs. New Mexico- Coming home with an extra day off, the Beavers rest, regroup and kick New Mexico once again.
@ Arizona State- The curse lives on as the Beavers underpreform and lose again at Arizona State.
vs. California- The Beavers, with the help of the Reser Stadium crowd, have the Bears number yet again. The Beaver D smothers the Bears offense once again while DA and the offense get back on track.
@ Washington- The Beavers road woes continue as the lowly Huskies run past Oregon State once again. It's closer than last year, but certainly a game the Beavers should have won.
vs. Washington State- THe Beavers come back fired up to play Washington State for homecoming. They avenge last year's heartbreaking loss in style, smashing the rebuilding Cougars.
@ Arizona- Although Stoops has the Wildcats improved, the Beavers still get a sound win on the road against the cellar dwellars.
Vs. USC- Beavers hang with USC through three quarters, but Leinhart leads the Trojans past the Beavers in the closing minutes. Reser goes home sad, but know they hung with the top of the Pac Trojans.
@Stanford- Beavers get their second consecutive road win against the lowly Cardinal, smothering them with speed on defense and the passing attack of DA to Hass/Newton/(insert WR who steps up)
vs. Oregon- Both teams come fired up into the Civil War game, Oregon with a chance to clinch 2nd place in the Pac-10, Oregon State trying to improve their bowl. Homefield again proves to be too much with the Beavers feeding off the crowd for a seven point win.
Final Record 7-4 (5-3).
LSU 38, OSU 17
OSU 26, BSU 24
OSU 42, NMU 21
ASU 31, OSU 21
OSU 35, CAL 21
UW 28, OSU 24
OSU 42, WSU 18
OSU 34, UA 13
USC 38, OSU 28
OSU 31, Stanford 17
OSU 31, Oregon 24
My honest opinion... the Ducks are going to be pretty good this season, they showed at times last year (WSU/UW/ASU were not them; OSU, Cal, Michigan were) what their potential was, but I think just plain youth and inexperience caused some of that inconsistency. The offense is obviously the Ducks strength, they are pretty well rounded in receiver, have some capable running backs, a solid QB, TE and offensive line. The defense will be stronger, but I believe it will still be the weakpoint. They have yet to really resolve the secondary issues, although their run defense remains strong even with the loss of Igor. Their schuedle and my predicted wins/losses:
Indiana W (should be a relatively easy opener)
@ Oklahoma L (OU passing attack and Oregon's secondary, overall depth and speed)
Idaho W (I would hope so)
Arizona State W (they will disappoint again)
@ Washington State W (lose a lot of talent and their senior QB leader... won't be as strong)
Arizona W (improved, but still not a contender)
@ Stanford W (also improving, but Ducks will win)
Washington W (a down year for Washington spells sweet revenge at home for Ducks)
@ California L (In what will be a huge game, Cal just squeeks by Oregon at home)
UCLA W (they have no offense, a good thing for Ducks... they roll)
@ Oregon State L (in a tightly contested game, homefield helps the Beavs topple the favored Ducks)
Final: 8-3 (6-2), good for a third in the Pac (Cal also 6-2, but hold tiebreaker).
