CLASSIC MOVIES

Welcome to my Classic Movies page. I decided
that I wanted to in my humble way to salute the classic movies. As long as I can remember I would sit in front of the television spending hours watching great movies.

My favorite actress is the great Bette Davis and my favorite actor is James Cagney.

I just love these pictures of Bette Davis. That is George Brent with her in the first picture. I just finished watching Deception the other day on the Turner Classic Movie cable station. It's been a long time since I've seen this film. Claude Raines and Bette Davis are great as usual. He plays her teacher in music and they became more than friends. Then out of the blue the man that she really loves reappears in her life and he is played wonderfully by Paul Henreid. You may remember that these three actors had worked together on Now, Voyager. While this film is not as good as Now, Voyager I do believe if you give it a try you will enjoy this film as much as I did.

Today I watched the film "The Corn is Green" (1945) starring Bette Davis and John Dall. She plays a spinster school teacher who takes a bright young welsh miner and educates him. I really enjoyed this film.

September 05, 2004...
I have decided that I wanted to set aside a few lines to a great british actor that passed away on February 21, 2002.

Most Americans will know him for playing in the Inspector Morse Mystery series on PBS and A & E. That's where I discovered him and I have started collecting all of the Inspector Morse shows. Also I bought the mini-series he did called Kavanagh QC and I loved it. He plays James Kavanagh QC a gruff barrister who oversees difficult cases. All thewhile, his family often encounters times which require his attention. I really enjoyed seeing him playing the protective and somewhat jealous husband and father. This was again John Thaw at his best. We truly lost one of the greatest actors. Below I have added some links to some films and tv shows that I have seen John Thaw in and that I think you would enjoy.

KAVANAGH QC

CHAPLIN(1992)

1946

I decided that I would begin with 1946 as the year I would start with to salute the academy awards since it is almost that time of year again. I will list some of my favorites from the year i select and tell you why I like them. Then maybe if you haven't seen these films then you will take the time to either rent them or catch them on channels like Turner Classic Movies. I have created a link for you to go visit TCM after your visit here.

Just click on the TCM logo after visiting my site and take a
look at a great web site.

  • THE BIG SLEEP

While The Big Sleep didn't when any academy awards I do think it should have. Bogie should have gotten it for best actor he was just great as the detective Philip Marlow. Also in this film with Bogie is his new bride in real life Lauren Bacall. They just melt the screen. This is the first classic I bought
to add to my dvd collection.

The Plot: General Sternwood, Philip Marlowe is asked to deal with some problems that his children are having. Marlowe finds that each problem centers around the disappearance of General Sternwood's favorite employee who supposedly ran off with a mobster's wife.

Interesting facts:Howard Hawks and Bogie got into an argument whether one of the characters was murdered or committed suicide. They sent a wire to the author Raymond Chandler to settle the arguement. Chandler replied that he didn't know either that the question was not answered in the original novel.
The mobster's henchmen are given the names of Sidney and Pete, a tribute to Bogie's frequent costars Sydney Greenstreet and Petter Lorre. The cast came back a year after completion of the film to do retakes before the films release.

    CAST

    1. Humphrey Bogart .... Philip Marlowe
    2. Lauren Bacall .... Vivian Sternwood Rutledge
    3. John Ridgely .... Eddie Mars
    4. Martha Vickers .... Carmen Sternwood
    5. Dorothy Malone .... Acme Bookstore proprietress
    6. Peggy Knudsen .... Mona Mars
    7. Regis Toomey .... Chief Insp. Bernie Ohls (District Attorney's Office)
    8. Charles Waldron .... Gen. Sternwood
    9. Charles D. Brown .... Norris (Sternwood's butler)
    10. Bob Steele .... Canino (Mars' henchman)
    11. Elisha Cook Jr. .... Harry Jones
    12. Louis Jean Heydt .... Joe Brody

  • THE BLUE DAHLIA
The Plot: An ex-pilot Johnny Morrison and his buddies George and Buzz (who happens to have a metal plate in his head),return from the war to their home town,Hollywood. In a homecoming from hell Johnny finds his wife Helen behaving like a tramp with a nightclub owner Eddie Harwood. With his marriage over, he wanders off leaving his gun behind and someone uses it to murder his wife. While dodging the cops and looking for the real killer, he is helped by a blonde Joyce, who just happens to be the estranged wife of Eddie Harwood.
Interesting facts: In Raymond Chandler's original script, the murder was committed by the shell-shocked Buzz. The War Office forced Chandler to rewrite the script, as it was not deemed acceptable to portray an American serviceman as a murderer.
Right after this films release there was a young woman by the name of Elizabeth Short was murdered in Los Angeles. The local newspapers dubbed the case the "Black Dahlia" as a morbid twist on this film's title. Unlike the movie, the Short murder is a case that was never solved.
This film was nominated for an oscar for Best Writing,Original Screenplay(Raymond Chandler)

    MAIN CAST

Alan Ladd .... Johnny Morrison (Lt.Cmdr., ret.)
