| There may never be another year in baseball as thrilling as 1998. There also may never be a team better than this current group of New York Yankees. The Yankees capped one of the best seasons in sports history, using a brilliant performance from oft-maligned Andy Pettitte and another effective outing from closer Mariano Rivera to complete a four-game sweep of the overwhelmed San Diego Padres, 3-0, and claim their 24th World Series title. It is the second championship in three years for the Yankees, who finished a remarkable 125-50 including the postseason. They have won 15 more World Series than any other baseball club and this championship gave them the most in pro sports, one more than the Montreal Canadiens of the NHL. |
