The 2002 Graduates Reunion was held at the Senior Centre of Doncaster Secondary College on the 2nd May 2003 between 6:30 - 8:30pm. Overall the night was a great success with around 100 ex-students turning up to this event. Everyone who attended thoroughly enjoyed themselves with many hugs and laughs shared amongst friends. ENTER scores, tertiary studies and careers were among a few of the popular topics of the night. Special thanks extend to the school for their hospitality and
generosity in sponsoring the event. The night would not have been
possible without the help of several key figures who contributed much of
their time to making this event a blooming success. Thanks to Peter Egeberg,
Jeff Pavlou, Jacinta Griffiths, Tony Neilly, Nick
Sheridan, Marguerite Birt, Sally Miller, Maya Metz, Chris Cameron (and his band), Christian Burns, Anh
Nguyen, Kelly Tsang and Sarah Khor. (Can someone email me the name
of the Hospitality student who helped out on the night?)
The first social event was held at the Cherry Hill Tavern on the 22nd February 2003. In all, approximately 60 graduates of 2000 and 2001 attended this function. This activity provided the opportunity for past students to mingle and socialise with colleagues who they have not seen for as much as 2 years. Both famous and infamous characters of the college were present in attendance and the night was spent sharing past memories, current projects and future ambitions, not to say, drinks.

One of the important goals set at the foundation of the Alumni was the active advertising and recruitment of DSC graduates to become members. Keeping this in mind, the executive committee organized our first publicity day on Saturday, 29th November to coincide with the state election. The publicity day was held at Doncaster Secondary College where it has been a regular voting centre for state and federal elections. Although DSCA had been established for barely 2 months, 2 week’s planning by committed members were more then enough for the day to be a promising start. Yellow and black coloured banners, posters, FAQ sheets, reminder cards, registration forms and decorations were well prepared and definitely stood out amongst the red, white, green and blue posters of various political parties. A registration and information station was setup right outside the entrance to attract voters’ attention and thankfully not too many voters got confused. EC members attended the desk from 8a.m. to 4.30 p.m. The day’s objectives were:
Of the two thousand seven hundred persons voting at DSC throughout the day, we were able to attract some 50 new members and also gave forms to relatives and friends of potential members. We’ve also managed to gather quite a bit of interest from school and community members about our organization and of course, the ‘good old’ days in high school. Minister of Parliament Mr. Victor Perton also offered services of his website for our recruitment purposes. Talking to various graduates throughout the day was definitely both interesting and motivating, and quite surprisingly, most of them still kept in touch with a number of their high school friends. Most have even offered to grab copies of the registration form or inform their friends by word of mouth. Undoubtedly
the publicity day had been a success and could be repeated on future elections,
with possible combination of fundraising events. Thanks to Sarah Khor, Maya Metz, Anh Nguyen and Kelly Tsang for donating their time and services. Left: Kelly and Sarah manning the publicity stand.

On October 8, 2002 the first meeting of the Doncaster Secondary College Alumni (DSCA) was held in the Senior School Centre. The purpose of this meeting was to formally establish the group and begin planning for up coming events. The meeting was a complete success with around twenty past students coming together to decide on the aims and objectives for the association. It was decided that the Alumni should not only be a means for past students to remain in contact with each other, but also a medium between current and past students. Such activities as student mentoring and giving talks on post-school life were all seen as ways in which current students could benefit from graduates. Elections were also held and congratulations go to Sarah Khor (President), Christian Burns (Secretary), Ahn Nugyen (Treasurer), Maya Metz (Activities Co-odinator) and Daniel Heim (Web Designer/Editor). A general committee was also formed to assist the executives with the running and events organised by the Alumni. Thank you to all the members who have already signed up and we encourage everyone to take an active in the group. If you would like any more information regarding the newly formed DSCA or are a past student and would like to join, please send an e-mail to [email protected] and we will be more than happy to assist you, all new members are welcome. The alumni would like to take this opportunity to thank the school for all their support in getting the alumni off the ground. Particularly we would like to acknowledge the time and effort of Mr Allen and Mr Egeberg, without whose efforts the DSCA would never have become more than an idea. by Christian Burns
