Report 1: Scientist Exploration - Due 30th September

  1. Select a person whose chemical contribution impresses or intrigues you. (find someone with whom you can identify)

  2. Consider the obstacles this chemist had to face (gender, race, ethnic etc.)

  3. How did this chemist become involve with chemistry

  4. What are the contributions to chemistry?

  5. What was the setting – home, industrial or academic?

  6. Were the ideas of the scientist accepted immediately?

  7. Did the chemist win any prizes or awards?

  8. What kind of family life did this chemist have?

  10. What were some other major historical scenes going on at the time of the chemist’s life?

Hint: the best way to start this report is to:

  1. look at the 75th anniversary issue of Chemical and Engineering News (reserved in the library)

  2. think of a contribution first e.g. nylon, aspirin then backtrack to the chemist

  3. look for minority/woman chemists reference.

  4. Who’s who in American Science.

You can find all the above in the Park University library

Everyone should write on a different chemist.  To assure this you will give/email me the name of the chemist within three days this report is given to you.

  • You will be required to speak for 2-3 mins on the major highlights of your chemist in the class, when the report is due.
  • Report should be between 3-4 pages excluding references.

Report 2: Cleaning with Chemistry - Due 30th October

Write a two page paper on Cleaning with Chemistry. It should cover the following:

  • identify a cleaner: from home, work, auto, from whichever place.
  • what is the chemical makeup of the cleaner?
  • what does it clean?? and what is the chemical makeup of that item?
  • how does the cleaning process work?
  • conclusions about the process and the cleaning and chemistry!

You will need at least two references.  They can be from the web, book, magazine or the company that makes the cleaner.

Report 3: Cultural aspect of Chemistry - Due 4th Dec

The paper should be between 3-4 pages long, 12 pt font of Times Roman font, with about 4-5 references.  Try to get all your references from magazines and newspapers.  Although you may need to get an idea from encyclopedias.

Please chose as different topics as possible.  Few examples of topics you can consider:

  • use of certain color dyes in certain cultures
  • evolution of medicines in certain cultures
  • history and chemistry of chocolate
  • preservation of bodies in the egyptian culture
  • the evolution of cosmetics
