Oxford and Warwick Castle

May 21

I took this picture of Oxford's main street from the top of the city's oldest tower.

Here's a view of the grounds at Warwick Castle.  I climbed about 500 steps to get to the tower where I took this picture.

This actor was dressed in full knight's armor and described the life of mediaeval knights.  He said that a fully armored knight and horse would way just ten pounds less than one ton!

Here I am, on one of Warwick Castle's highest towers.

Stonehenge and Salisbury

We stopped at both of these famous places on our way to Bath, which is in Southwestern England.

Here I am at Stonehenge.

This is the Salisbury Cathedral.  I think it boasts England's tallest spire.

Bath

This city originated as a spa town for Romans.  It was revived as a popular resort in the 19th century.  During this period, Jane Austen lived in Bath for a short while, but she was not fond of the city.  Later, during World War II, Germans bombed the city because of its cultural importance.

Here's Andie, at the Roman Baths for which the city was named.  Originally, this area, the main room, was covered by a large vaulted ceiling.  The Bath Abbey is in the background.

Here I am, near the River Avon that runs through Bath.  It's not the same Avon that runs through Stratford, though.  "Avon" was a Saxon word for "river", so there are several Rivers Avon in England.  (translated, that's Rivers River)

Here's a Bath bird in the river. =)

This hotel was designed in the 1800's with three roof styles representing three classes of people.  The turret represents the royalty, the adjacent style represents the wealthy landowners, and the final style represents peasants.  The architect designed this to signify that anyone is welcome in Bath and at this hotel.

English Peculiarities

The British way of saying "Yield"

My personal favorite is this, the Elderly Crossing.

I hope you've enjoyed the photos!  Within a few weeks, I should have the pictures up from my return to England.
