Naturopathic Medicine
Naturopathic medicine as an American healing tradition dates back to the late 1800s.  The individual treatment modalities such as hydrotherapy, physical medicine, homeopathy, botanicals and manipulation techniques were grouped into a system and used for the prevention and cure of chronic illness and disease.
Naturopathic medicine has a distinct philosophy of healing that sets it apart from other health care systems. This philosophy is based upon the following six basic principles of healing:

  1)
First do no harm- The Naturopath recognizes the signals of the body and takes care not to distress the bodys inner rhythm during the natural healing process.
  2)
The healing power of nature- The human body has an innate healing mechanism and a robust capacity to maintain and restore wellbeing.  The physician will assist in recognizing and removing the obstacles to health and further provide the nourishment, stimulation, and support necessary to return to proper balance.
  3)
Identify and treat the cause- It is imperative that the cause of the illness is discovered to get to the root of a health imbalance.  Only then will the surface symptoms be addressed to attain comfort in the healing process.
  4)
Treat the whole person-To optimally function, the human body in all its complexity, must utilize the Mind, Body, and Spirit to maintain the delicate balance of healthy living.  As we all know, our well-being determines the outcome of everyday.
  5)
Doctor as teacher- The Naturopath has been trained to educate and guide individuals in the needs that are specific to their situation. Self-recognition of the bodys signals is the first step in maintaining wellness as awareness is essential in the natural healing processes.
  6)
Prevention is the best medicine- Building a strong foundation is paramount to the Naturopathic philosophy.  The primary goal is to support the body in becoming a fortress against bacteria, viruses, and degenerative states of being.  Prevention methods address healthy lifestyles, exercise, and proper nutrition as well as individual health risks or genetic predispositions.

These principles are not in themselves amazing or profound, rather they are merely truths based on common sense and are essential for true healing.
