2:102,103 MAGIC OR SORCERY

2:102 “ And they (i.e. the Jews) adopted (the black art of) magic (sorcery)

which the devils (amongst the human beings & jinns)recited in the

kingdom of (Prophet) Sulaiman (Solomon); and it was not (Prophet)

Sulaiman who disbelieved, but these were rather the devils who

disbelieved and who taught the people (the art of) magic. And they

(i.e. the Jews) also adopted (the art of sorcery) that was given to

the Angels Haroot & Maroot at Babil (the city of Babylon).

Nevertheless, they refused to teach any one (about sorcery) unless

they stated that they were a test for them and, therefore, they

must not become disbelievers (by adopting sorcery). The people

(despite such a warning) learnt from them (the art of sorcery or

incantation) with which they tried to create separation between the

man and his wife ; but the fact is they can not inflict any harm with

this (art) without the Commandment of Allah; and they learn that

(art) which is harmful and which does not benefit them. And they

surely know that who so ever purchased it (i.e. the filthy sorcery),

there is no mercy for such a person in the Hereafter; and how worst

it is with which they sold themselves; it would have been better if

they, if they could know (about it).”

[OR- Other Interpretations:]

[“ And they (the Jews) adopted magic, which the devils recited in the

kingdom of (Prophet) Sulaiman ; and there is no truth that (Prophet)

Sulaiman disbelieved…, and there is no truth either that something was

given to the Angels Haroot & Maroot (like sorcery)…]

[ Some others interpret that the Angels Haroot & Maroot showed

the difference between the miracle and sorcery…]

[ Still others interpret that Haroot & Maroot were the two wicked

leaders of the people, who taught the art of sorcery (magic, sahr).]
