2:62 THE BELIEF IN ALLAH & THE LAST DAY

2:62 "Indeed those who are Muslims, and those who call themselves

Jews, Christians, and Sabieen*, who so ever believes in Allah

(i.e. obey His Commandments & His Messenger Muhammad-

peace be upon him) and the Last Day, and perform good deeds

(according to the Way of the Holy Prophet), for them there is a

great reward from their Lord; and they will have neither any

fear nor any grief.”

** Belief in Allah: The Holy Prophet defined it as follows:

“ The belief in Allah means to testify ‘La ilaha illallaho Muhammad

-ur-Rasoolullah’ [i.e. no one is to be worshipped except Allah and

Muhammad (peace be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah ,

Offer prayers, pay zakat, keep fasts in Ramada’n…” (Bukhari 53)

BELIEF IN ALLAH AND THE LAST DAY

1. The above Verse 2:62 may be understood clearly by studying the Verses 5:65 to 5:69, where it has been repeated in 5:69 by using almost the same words. In such Verses, the Muslims and the People of the Book (Jews, Christians and Sabieen) have been commanded not only to believe in Allah and the Last Day, but to establish Al-Quran also. These Verses clearly state that the people of the Book will have absolutely nothing from the Guidance, unless they establish Al-Quran (revealed to Muhammad- peace be upon him). It may be noted that the previous Verses (2:57-61) indicated that the Jews were punished and humiliated due to disobedience. Here in 2:62 above, the Muslims have been listed at the top and have been warned that they will also be punished, if they do not fear Allah and the Last Day.

2. Note that in the previous Verses 2:47 & 48, the Jews were reminded to fear the Last Day, when intercession will not be accepted about them (unless they believe in Muhammad-peace be upon him).

3. The objective of the above Verse 2:62 is not to state just the two Elements* of Faith ‘ Allah & the Last Day, only but to persuade all types of people, including the Muslims, to accept Islam sincerely and thus avoid the punishment of Allah, as indicated in the previous Verses 2:57-61 relating to the Jews, who earned the wrath of Allah due to disobedience. (The elements of faith have been stated in 4:136; 2:177.)*
