[*Note: The elements of Faith have been stated in 4:136 & 2:177. Anyone who does not believe in such Elements of Faith is misguided to the extreme extent and is a pagan. Verse No. 136, pointing out to the Elements of Faith states as under:
O’ you who believe! Believe in Allah and His Messenger
(Muhammad- peace be upon him), and the Book (Al-Quran),
which He sent down to His Messenger, and also believe in the
Book, which He sent down before; and who so ever refutes Allah,
His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Last Day, then,
of course, he went astray to the farthest extent.” (4:136)]
[Note: The element of faith are thus: To believe in Allah, His Angels, all the revealed Books, all the Messengers of Allah & the Last Day. ] (See also 2:17; 4:150,151)
[Note that the Jews & Christians do not believe in all the Books and the Messengers. The Jews refute Isa (Jesus) and the Gospel (Injeel), whereas the Christians and the Jews refute our Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him) and Al-Quran revealed to him. ]
[Note further that the Holy Quran in 4:150,151 clearly declares those as the real disbelievers/pagans, who believe in some of the Messengers and reject the others.]
Two groups:
[We may still note that the Holy Quran divides the people into two groups in 22:17 i.e. (a) the believers (Muslims) , and (b) the pagans or non believers (Kuffa’r) i.e. the Jews, Sabieen, Christians, Magoos (Magians), and Mushrikeen. Almighty Allah will give His Verdict about these two groups on the Day of Judgement, and will admit the believers only into Paradise (See 22:14, 17, 19,23)]
4. Here in 2:62 above ‘to believe in Allah & the Last Day’ means ‘to fear Allah & the Last Day’( and accept/act upon Islam with sincerity) . For example, the Holy Quran states: :
i) “The adulterer and the adulteress, beat each of them with 100
lashes…if you believe in Allah & the Last Day.” (24:2)
ii) “ And it is unlawful for the divorced women to conceal what
Allah has created in their wombs, if they believe in Allah and
the Last Day…” (2:228)

5. The Holy Prophet also used the words ‘belief in Allah & the Last Day’ in his Sayings.. For example, he said:
i) “Who so ever believes in Allah & the Last Day, he must speak good, otherwise keep quiet.”
ii) “ Who so ever believes in Allah & the Last Day, he must not
harm his neighbor.”
iii) “ Who so ever believes in Allah & the Last Day, he must honor
his guest.” (Sahih Al-Bukhari:6110)
