(A brief history of disobedience by the Jews begins here.)
WORSHIPPING THE CALF:
i) When Prophet Musa was away (on the mountain), his people made from gold and silver (a physical model) of a calf, depicting its structure only, but without having any movement, at all…And when (Prophet) Musa returned, he flared up…,threw away the plates (of the Torah),and caught his brother (Haroon) by the hair of his head (7:148-150) [and bybeard (20:94)]. Prophet Musa then turned to ‘Samiri’ (the fabricator of the model of calf) so as to punish him, who then suffered from such a horrible disease that he alerted others not to touch him (20:95-97).
ii) The worshipping of calf was an horrible act of disobedience on the part of the Jews, who had seen the miracle of the splitting of the river Nile and drowning of Phiraun. They thus reverted from their Religion and , thereby refuted Allah’s Messenger. To refute Allah’s Messenger, after seeing the miracles and other proofs, is to invite punishment from Allah. Consequently, their fellow men were ordered to kill them. Again note that the love for the calf penetrated deep into their hearts (2:93), and consequently they had to be punished. It may be noted further that the Jews were so thankless and so disobedient that immediately after crossing the river Nile, when they saw some people submitting to idols, they requested Prophet Musa to make for them a similar idol for worshipping.
