3:190-194 SCIENTIFIC MORALITY OF BELIEVERS

AND THE SPLENDID PRAYERS:

3:190 “ Verily, in the creation of the heavens and earth and in the night

and day occurring one after the other – there are (great) signs for the

people of wisdom (like scholars & scientists)”. (2:164)

3:191 “They (i.e. the people of wisdom) remember Allah while standing,

sitting and while lying on their sides; and they think deeply in the

creation of the heavens and earth (, imploring): ‘ Our Lord! You have not

created (all) this, purposeless. Glory to you. (Kindly) save us from the

torment of the fire (of Hell)”. (4:103;38:27;45:22)

3:192 “Our Lord! Whom so ever you admit to the Fire (of Hell), you

have, undoubtedly, disgraced him. And for ‘zalimun’ (non-believers)

there will be no supporters”.

3:193 “ Our Lord! We have heard the call made by the (most

respectable) one (i.e. the Holy Prophet), calling towards ‘Ima’n (belief)

(with the words): ‘Believe in your Lord’, (and) we, therefore, have

believed. Our Lord! (Kindly) wipe off our sins, remove from us our evil

deeds, and make us to die with the virtuous”.

(2:285,286;23:109)

3:194 “ Our Lord! (Kindly) grant us that You promised us through Your

Messengers, and (please) disgrace us not on the Day of Resurrection.

Of course, You do not go against Your Promise”. *

* [Similar prayers of the believers have been stated at the end of

Surah Al-Baqarah. See commentary on 2:286.]

3:195 “Thus, their Lord accepted their prayers (and responded): ‘ I will

not, at all, destroy the deeds of any of you, may that person be a male

or female. You are from one another (having equal rights in the matter

of reward for your deeds). Therefore, those, who:

i) migrated (to Al-Madina under terrible oppression),

ii) were expelled from their houses,

iii) were tortured in My Way,

iv) fought (dauntlessly), and

v) were killed (martyred),

I (Allah) will certainly wipe off their evil deeds from them, and will surely

admit them to the Gardens (of Paradise) under which the rivers flow.

This is the reward from Allah, and with Allah is the best reward”.

(2:218;4:97,100;8:20,74;16:41,42,110;22:58)

The following points may be noted with regard to the above Verses:

1. Ibn Abbas narrated that the Holy Prophet got up, when 1/3rd of the night was left over (i.e. at Tahajjad) and recited the above Verse 3:190 on raising his head towards the heaven. (Bukhari:4293)

2. The Holy Prophet recited the last 10 Verses of Surah Aal-Imran on rising at the time of Tahajjad, as narrated by Ibn Abbas.

(Bukhari:4294)

3. Hameed bin Abdur-Rehman bin Auf stated that in a journey, the Holy Prophet got up at Tahajjad time and, on raising his head towards the heaven, recited the above Verses 3:190 to 3:194. (Nisai – Mishkat:1141)

4. It has been reported in Tafheem-ul-Quran under 3:195 that a few non-Muslims came to the Holy Prophet and said: “ Prophets like Musa (Moses), Easa (Jesus) and others brought miracles... What kind of miracles have you brought (please)?” The Holy Prophet recited the last Verses 3: 190 – 198 of Surah Aal-Imran, and said: “ This is what I have brought”.

5. The Holy Quran is the greatest of all miracles. It, therefore, does not require any outside miracle / proof. It is a proof in itself. The other Prophets required outside proofs for the truth of their prophet-hood.

The Holy Prophet said:

“ Every prophet was granted signs / miracles in proportion to the

number of those, who believed in him.. What I have been granted

is the revelation (i.e. Al-Quran) (in original / inimitable words)

(whose every Verse is a sign / miracle), which Allah has revealed

to me. I am, therefore, hopeful (sure) that my followers will be

greatest in number on the Day of Judgement”. (Bukhari:6846)

6. It must be realized that in addition to Al-Quran, the Holy Prophet was granted innumerable miracles. Please study the books of Hadith, in this connection, such as:

a) Bukhari:3378 to 3448

b) Mishkat:5601 to 5689 etc.

See also commentary under 3:179

(Sayings of the Holy Prophet about his knowledge of the unseen.)

7. In the above Verse 3:191, it has been stated that the people of wisdom think deeply in the creation of heavens and earth. It has been reported that the Holy Prophet said:

“ You study not the creator, but His creature”.

Note:

The problem with the Greek philosophers and scientists was that they amalgamated science with philosophy / metaphysics, and started studying God – the Creator. The result was that they plunged into bewilderment, and therefore, neither science developed nor philosophy.

8. The above Verses (3:190 – 195) indicate the scientific morality of the believers. Through their deep study of the heavens and earth and whatever is in between, their belief in Allah (the Creator), the Messenger (Muhammad - peace be upon him) and the Day of Judgement is strengthened.

9. There are in the world such scientists, who reject the existence of God. They are ‘materialists’. In their view, the world exists from eternity and has no author or creator. They think that the man or animal comes from the semen and the semen from the animal. They believe that it has been like this and will always be like this. They are unbelievers.
