3:165 - 168 CALAMITY:

3:165 “ Why it is so that when any calamity falls on you, although you

inflicted (on your enemy) a calamity double * than this, you started

saying: ‘ From where this (calamity) has come to us’. Say (Holy

Prophet): ‘ It has come from yourselves (only) (because

of your misdeeds). Indeed, Allah is Powerful on every thing”. *

3:166 “ And the calamity that fell on you on the day, when the two armies met (in

Uhud), was with the Permission of Allah so that He might test the believers”.

3:167 “ And so that He may test the hypocrites (also). And when they

were asked to come out and fight in the Way of Allah or defend them-

selves (and the city of Madina), they replied: ‘ If we had known that the

fighting would take place, we would have, of course followed you. They,

on that day, were nearer to disbelief than belief. They utter from their

mouths which is not in their hearts, And Allah knows (all) what they are

concealing”.

3:168 “ And they said to their brothers, while they themselves stayed

(back home), : ‘ Had they listened to us, they would not have been

killed. Say (Holy Prophet): ‘ Keep away death from yourselves

(then), if you are true (in your statement)”. * [33:16,17]

* [This Verse points out Abdullah bin Ubayy (the leader of the hypocrites),

who pulled back his 300 followers before fighting in Uhud on the lame

excuse that his point of view for fighting inside Madina was not

accepted.]

MARTYRES – ALIVE:

3:169 “ And don’t think those, who are killed in the Way of Allah, as

dead. Of course, they are alive with their Lord, and are given livelihood”. (2:154)

3:170 “ They are quite happy with what Allah has bestowed on them

from His Grace and they take delight for those who have not yet joined

them (i.e. have not yet martyred), but are left behind – on them there is

no fear and they will not be grieved”.

3:171 “They are delighted with the Grace and bounty of Allah. And, indeed,

Allah does not destroy the reward of the believers”.

The Holy Prophet said:

a) “ When your brothers were martyred on the day (battle) of Uhud,

Allah kept their souls amongst the birds of green color, flying

over the rivers of Paradise and eating the fruits of their trees. They

reside in the golden lamps hanging under the ‘Throne of Allah’.

When they found such a splendid food, drink and dwellings…, they

said: “ Who will convey to our brothers about us that we are alive in

Paradise, so that they may not become careless about Paradise

and that they may not become sluggish in the battle” Allah then

said: “ I will convey it to them”. Accordingly, the above Verse

3:169 was revealed.” (Abu Daud – Mishkat: 3675)

[Seerat-un-Nabi by Ibn Hashsham, Vol.II, P.111]

b) “ I wish from the core of my heart that I am killed (martyred) in

the Way of Allah, and brought to life again, killed again and

brought to life again…” [The Holy Prophet repeated such words

three or four times.] (Bukhari:2644)

c) “ A martyr has six characteristics before Allah:

1. He is forgiven in the first instance, and he is shown his place

in Paradise.

2. He is protected from the torment of grave.

3. He remains in tranquility from the great terror (on the Day

of Judgement).

4. A throne of honor will be placed on his head, a ruby of which

will be better than this entire world and whatever is in it.

5. He will be married to 72 Hur Een.

6. His intercession in favor of 70 of his relatives will be accepted.

(Tirmizi, Ibn Majah – Mishkat:3656)

d) “ Three types of persons will be the first to enter Paradise:

i) A martyr.

ii) A person, who abstains from the unlawful.

iii) A person, who does not ask for any thing.

iv) A slave, who worships Allah well and also seeks good

for his master. (Tirmizi – Mishkat:3654)

d) “ A person, who prays to be martyred truthfully (from the core of his

heart), Allah will elevate him to the ranks of martyrs, though he may

die on his bed”. (Muslim - Mishkat:3624)

e) “ None of those, who entered Paradise, will wish to return to this

world, excepting a martyr, wishing to be killed ten times on his

return (to this world), since he observes the reward of martyrdom”.

(Bukhari & Muslim - Mishkat:3627)
