THE HOLY PROPHET SERIOUSLY INJURED:

[THE BATTLE OF UHUD, AS REPORTED BY IBN HASHSHAM]

3:144 “ And Muhammad (peace be upon him) is not but the (great)

Messenger (of Allah). Many a Messenger, of course, separated away

before him. So, if he dies or is martyred, will you then turn back on your

heels (to the sate of disbelief)? And whosoever turns back on his heels,

he shall never harm Allah, at all; and Allah will reward soon those, who

are grateful”. * [5:75;21:34;39:30]

* Ibn Hashsham reports the following narration about the battle of Uhud:

*1. The Holy Prophet stationed his troops on a high plateau in the valley of Uhud and ordered them not to fight unless they were commanded to do so. He further stationed 50 archers at the crucial Uhud pass under Abdullah bin Jubair, and ordered them not to leave the pass at any cost, irrespective of the battle being in favor or against the Muslims. They were ordered to shoot arrows at the cavalry of the enemy, if they tried to come near to them.

Abud Jana received the sword of the Holy Prophet and the flag was given to Masab bin Umair.

2. During the battle, Hamza(the uncle of the Holy Prophet) fought quite heroically and killed many flag carriers of Quraish in quick succession. However, when he was wiping out the non -believers with his sword, all of a sudden, Wahshi (a slave) threw his weapon to him with a severe force from a great distance, which pierced through his body. Hamza jumped to counter attack him, but fell down, since the weapon had done its job, and consequently, he was martyred.

3. Masab bin Umair, the flag carrier of the Muslims, was also martyred.

4. After the martyrdom of Masab bin Umair, the

Holy Prophet gave the flag to Ali. When the battle was quite intensified, the Holy Prophet ordered Ali to advance with his flag. Ali advanced and challenged the enemy by announcing that he would break away each and every joint of his rival. The flag carrier of the enemy came forward, but Ali killed him there and then.

5. The enemy fled away after a ferocious battle. The Muslims started collecting the war booty. The archers also rushed towards the war booty and vacated the mountain pass. Abdullah bin Jubair tried to remind them about the orders of the Holy Prophet, but to no effect. The result was that only Abdullah remained there on the mountain pass.

Seeing the mountain pass as vacant, the enemy (led by Khalid bin Waleed) attacked the Muslims from the rear. They could not withstand the sudden attack and, therefore, fled away. The Holy Prophet stood there like a rock with a few believers, calling : “ Come towards me, O’slaves of Allah. Come towards me, O’ slaves of Allah”.

(See Zia-ul-Quran & Tadabbur-e-Quran under 3:153)

The enemy then started throwing stones. Because of the severe pressure of the people, the Holy Prophet fell down on his side with which his front lower tooth broke off.. His face and lower lip were also severely wounded. Further, two rings of his armor also penetrated deep into his face. Later, the Holy Prophet fell down in a ditch. With the help of Ali and Talha bin Ubaidullah, the Holy Prophet stood up. Malik bin Sanan (father of Abu Saeed Khudri) absorbed the blood of his face and swallowed it off. On that the Holy Prophet said:

“Whosoever touched my blood, the Fire of Hell will not touch him”.

The Holy Prophet also said:

“ Whosoever wishes to see a martyr walking on earth, he may see

Talha bin Abaidullah”.

Abu Abaida bin Jirah pulled out quite gently and carefully the two rings of the armor out of the face of the Holy Prophet. When the first ring was pulled out, his front tooth fell off. And when the second ring was pulled out, his second tooth also fell off.

6. When the Holy Prophet was seriously wounded, some one rumored that he was martyred, which demoralized the new and weak Muslims. On this, the above Verse 3:144 was revealed.(Zia-ul-Quran under 3:144)

7. When the rumor about the martyrdom of the Holy Prophet spread, Ans bin Nazr found Umar, Talha and other Muslims sitting at a place, as disappointed. When he was informed about the Prophet, he said:

“ Life is useless then after the Holy Prophet. Let us all go and

fight for the cause for which he gave his life”.

He then fought bravely against the enemy and was martyred. There were seventy wounds on his body due to which he could not be recognized. Only her sister recognized him due to his fingers. (Bukhari:3822)

8. Sad bin Abi Waqas reported that a woman’s husband, brother and father were martyred in the battle. When she was informed about them, she inquired about the Holy Prophet. When she was informed that he was alright, she insisted to see him; and on seeing him, she said: “ With his presence, all calamities are unimportant”.

9. Umm-e- Ammara, a brave Muslim woman, also participated in the battle. The Muslims emerged victorious in the beginning, but the condition turned turtle due to the blunder of the archers, when they vacated the mountain passage for seizing the war booty. At that stage, Umm-e-Ammara proceeded towards the Holy Prophet and started taking part in the battle. She was striking the enemy with her sword quickly in succession with her one hand for the defense of the Holy Prophet, and was shooting arrows with her second hand. In spite of the fact that she was severely wounded, she struck many blows of his sword on a non-believer, called Ibn Quma’, who stated that he would not leave the Holy Prophet alive.

10. Abud Janna bent over the Holy Prophet and in his defense received the arrows of the enemy on his back. Sa’d bin Abi Waqas was, on the other hand, shooting arrows towards the enemy in defense of the Holy Prophet. While protecting the Holy Prophet, Abu Talha received the arrows of the enemy with which his hand was rendered ineffective. (Bukhari:3836-37)

11.Ibn Isaac reported:

“The Holy Prophet was shooting arrows towards the enemy, when a part of the bow broke off. Qatada picked it up. It was still in Qatada’s hand, when his eye was injured, which swelled and came out of its position. Qatada then fell down on his face. The Holy Prophet leveled his eye into its position with his hand with the result that it was cured and the eye sight of Qatada became brighter than ever before”.

12. In spite of the fact that the Holy Prophet was seriously wounded, he along with his Companions climbed a hill, where Ubayy bin Khalf (a non-believer) reached there and spoke aloud: ‘ O’ Muhammad (peace be upon him)! If you are saved, Allah may not keep me alive’. The Holy Prophet took a spear and set it into motion with such a great acceleration that the people around him fled away, being extremely frightened. When the spear hit Ubayy, he stumbled dreadfully on his horse. After being wounded, he returned to Quraish in agony and said to them: ‘ By Allah! Muhammad (peace be upon him) has killed me, and even if he had spit on me, I would have surely died’. Ubayy then died on the way to Mecca.

13.The Holy Prophet was still on the hill with his Companions, when some men of the enemy, including Khalid bin Waleed, climbed the mountain (of Uhud). The Holy Prophet prayed: “ O’ Allah! It is not befitting for them to be at the top of us”. After a fierce fighting, Ali, Umar, Usman and a group of immigrants from Mecca forced them down the hill. (See also ‘ The Battle of Uhud’ under 2:216)

13.Before returning, Abu Sufyan spoke aloud on climbing some hill: ‘ Is Muhammad (peace be upon him) here ?…Is Abu Bakr here? … Is Umar here? Then, he replied himself: ‘ They all have been killed. Had they been alive, they would have certainly responded’. Umar could not tolerate him and replied: “ O’ enemy of Allah! You are a liar. Allah has kept us alive to disgrace you”. Abu Sufyan stated: ‘ Hubal* to remain as elevated”. The Holy Prophet ordered (Umar) to reply: “ Allah is Great and elevated”. Abu Sufyan stated that for them was Uzza *, whereas they (Muslims) did not have Uzza.. The Holy Prophet ordered to reply (back): “ Allah is our Supporter, whereas they don’t have any supporter”.

* [Hubal and Uzza were the idol gods of the polytheists of Mecca.]

14. On reaching back home after the battle, the Holy Prophet gave his sword to his Fatima, by saying: “ My daughter! Wash the blood off from it. It really proved quite true in the battle”. Ali also gave his sword to her, saying: “ Wash the blood off from it also. By Allah! It also proved quite true in the battle”. On that the Holy Prophet said to Ali: “ If you remained steadfast in the battle, then along with you Sahl bin Hunaif and Abud Jana also remained steadfast.”

15. The sword of the Holy Prophet was called as ‘Zulfiqar’.

And some one announced in the battle of Uhud:

“ La saif illa zulfiqar; wa la fata illa Ali ”

[There is not a sword but Zulfiqar, and there is

not a young man but Ali.]
