THE BATTLE OF UHUD (CONTINUED)

3:137 “Many ideologies / way of living (of the eople) have gone by.

Therefore, just move on earth and see what was the fate of those who

disbelieved”.

[6:11;12:109;27:69;30:9,10;35:43,44;40:21,22;47:10]

3:138 “ This (Al-Quran) is a (serious) lecture for the people and

an advice for ‘Al-Muttaqun’ (God fearing people, righteous,

virtuous)”.

3:139 “ And do not be discouraged nor regret (the temporary setback in

the Battle of Uhud), as you will be superior, if you are (true) believers”.

[3:146;4:104;47:35]

MARTYRES OF UHUD (3:140 -143)

3:140 “ If a wound has been inflicted on you (in Uhud), then a similar wound has

also been inflicted on the enemy (in Badr). And these days (of history) (or

circumstances), We go on changing between the people so that Allah may show

to the people who (really) believe and so that He may take martyrs * from you.

And Allah (of course) does not like ‘Zalimun’ (disbelievers)”.

3:41 “ And so that Allah may purify the believers (from sins) and

annihilate the non-believers.”

* Note: In the battle of Badr, 70 men of the enemy were killed and 70 were made captives. The angel Gabriel on that occasion informed the Holy Prophet to let his Companions know that if they decided to set the captives (70 in number) free on ransom, the next year (in the battle of Uhud) 70 Muslims would be martyred. The Companions of the Holy Prophet opted to be martyred (in Uhud) against the 70 captives to be freed by them (in Badr). [See Tirmizi - Mishkat:3795]

3:142 “ Do you think that you will enter Paradise, whereas Allah has not

yet shown those amongst you who have participated in Jihad and who

are steadfast (in calamities)?”. *

[2:155,214;9:16;29:2;33:11;47:31]

* In Verse No. 214 of Surah Al-Baqarah, it has been stated:

“ Do you think that you will enter Paradise, whereas you have

not yet passed through the condition as confronted by the people

before you? Great troubles and calamities were inflicted upon

them, and they were shocked to such an extent that the Messenger and

his Companions prayed: ‘ When will the assistance of Allah come?’

Listen! The assistance of Allah is surely coming near”. (2:214)

[See Commentary under 2:153 –157]

3:143 “ And, of course, you wished to be martyred before you faced it;

so you have surely seen this (martyrdom) now clearly with your open

eyes”.
