Or, (about the hypocrites who are confused about Islam) their
example is that of a heavy rain from the heavens with darkness,
thunder and lightning in it. They insert their fingers in ears
because of fear of death from thunder. But (it has no effect, as)
Allah has surrounded the non believers from all sides (i.e. these
are not the ears alone, but every part of the body is affected by
thunder). There is every likelihood that the lightning may snatch
away their eye sight. When the light flashes, they move ahead in
it (i.e. when the Muslims get a victory, they join them), but when
the darkness prevails over them(after the light disappears) they
stand (and wait) (i.e. when the Muslims face the difficulties with
courage, the hypocrites watch them from a distance, waiting
for the outcome of confrontation). And had Allah decided, He
would have destroyed their (power of) hearing as well as their
eye sight. In deed, Allah is powerful on every thing.”

The Holy Prophet said:
“ The example of the Guidance with which I have been sent is like an
abundant rain so that if it falls on a fertile land, it absorbs water resulting
in a bumping crop. But if the rain falls on (an impermeable) land (having
a depression), water accumulates there and with it Allah (Almighty)
benefits the people and their cattle. They drink water from it and perform
agricultural operations. But if the rain falls on a flat piece of land, it neither
accumulates nor any crop grows there. This is the example of those, who
are benefited , or not benefited, by Allah’s Religion.”(Bukhari:79)
