c) The Rights of a Daughter:

1. Islam eradicated the horrible evil of burying the girls alive. Further, the Holy Quran admonished those parents, who show unwelcome attitude on the birth of a baby girl. It states:

“ And when the happy news about the birth of a baby girl is given to

any of you, his face darkens, and he is utterly grieved. He skips away

from the people (being ashamed of them) due to the evil (of the girl)

about whom the news were given to him.. (He is bothered what to

do). Should he disgrace her or bury her alive in the

earth?…” (16:58,59)

2. Kindness:

The parents are bound to treat their daughters with Kindness and without preferring their sons over them.

The Holy Prophet said:

“ If any one has a daughter and he does not bury her, and neither

disgrace her nor prefers his sons over her, Allah will admit him

to Paradise.” ( Abu Daud - Mishkat:4760)

“ Whosoever brings up her three daughters or three sisters, educates

them (i.e. ‘fa adabbahunna’) and show mercy on them till Allah

makes them bountiful, then it is upon Allah to grant him Paradise.”

The Holy Prophet added (on being asked): “ This is also applicable

in case of two or a single daughter.”

( Sharah-as-Sunnah – Mishkat: 4756)

3. Right of Property:

i) As a daughter, she has the appropriate right of property.

ii) It may be noted that the European woman was not granted property rights till 1897, after the passage of series of acts from1879 to 1897.

[Encyclopedia of Britanica, 1968, Volume 23, page 624.]

iii) In Islam, the woman is granted the property right as a daughter, as a sister, as a wife and as a mother, as mentioned in Surah An- Nisa of the Holy Quran.

4. Right of Education / Obligation:

In Islam, to get education is not only the right, but it is obligatory upon every Muslim (male and female), as commanded by the Holy Prophet. (Baihqi - Mishkat:206)

The Holy Quran states:

i) “…Indeed, (only) those fear Allah (much) amongst His slaves,

who are the scholars …” (35:28)

ii) “…Are those who have the knowledge equal to those who have

no knowledge?…” (39:9)

iii) “…And those who have been granted the knowledge, they have

been raised in grades…” (58:11)

The Holy Prophet said:

i) “ To seek knowledge is obligatory on every Muslim (male or

female).” (Baihqi - Mishkat:206)

ii) “ Whosoever adopts a way to seek knowledge, Allah will

facilitate the way for him/her towards paradise…”

(Baihqi - Mishkat: 237)

iii) “ …The superiority of a scholar over the one who worships is

like the superiority of the moon over the stars. And, indeed,

the scholars are the heirs of the Prophets…”

(Ahmad, Tirmizi, Abu Daud, Ibn Majah - Mishkat:201)
