18 THE GREAT WITNESS OF ALLAH

3:18 “Allah (Himself) gave a witness (to the fact) that there is no God but He (Allah) (alone) (i.e. no one is to be worshipped except He alone), and the angels as well as the people of knowledge*(also gave such a witness). (They further gave a witness that) He (Allah) is sustaining (this universe) with justice. There is no God but He (Allah) (alone), the All –Powerful, the All – Wise.”

*[Note that the people of knowledge i.e. the scholars received knowledge through the teachings of the Prophets. Almighty Allah has honored them by bracketing them with His Witness. These are the honorable scholars, who ordered about the establishment of justice, when the wretched and the pagans tried to kill them, as indicated ahead in Verse No.3:21.]

THE GREAT WITNESS:

1. ALLAH’S WITNESS:

The above Verse 3:18 is known as the Verse of Great Witness, since it is Almighty Allah Himself, Who has given such a witness.

2. ‘La Ilaha Illa Hu’ [(i.e. no one is to be worshipped but He (Allah)] In the above Verse 3:18, ‘La Ilaha Illa Hu’ has appeared twice.

In the Holy Quran, ‘La Ilaha Illa Hu’ has appeared in Verses:

59:22,23;64:13;40:3;44:8;3:2,18;2:246;20:98;28:70;6:106;4:87 etc.

3. a) ‘La Ilaha Illa Allah’ (i.e. no one is to be worshipped but Allah)

This sentence appears in the Holy Quran under 37:35; 47:19 …

b) ‘Muhammad-ur-Rasool-u- Allah’

[i.e. Muhammad (peace upon him) is Allah’s Messenger] In the Holy Quran, this sentence appears in 48:29.

4. Allah’s Witness for Muhammad (peace be upon him):

Note that the Holy Quran also provides Allah’s Witness as well as of the angels about the Messenger-ship of Muhammad (peace be upon him) in these words:

“ But Allah gives a witness to that which He sent down (Al-Quran)

to you [Muhammad (peace be upon you)] . He (Allah) sent it down

with His Knowledge; and the angels (also) give a witness to it. And

Allah is All-Sufficient as a Witness.” (4:166)

5. The Evidence of the Universe about the Oneness of Allah:

The entire universe provides full evidence about the Oneness of Allah. He (Allah) alone is the Lord, sustaining the universe with justice. The Holy Quran defines the Lord of the Universe as below:

a) “O’ mankind! Worship your Lord, Who created you and those

before you…He alone made the earth as floor for you and the

heaven as roof; and He sent down water from the heaven from

which He produced crops and fruits for your livelihood. You

must not then establish rivals for Allah, when you surely know

about it.” (2:21,22)

b) “ Allah is He, Who made the night for you to take rest in it, and

made the day quite bright for seeing…This is your Lord, the

Creator of every thing. No one is to be worshipped but He

only…(40:61,62)

c) “ Allah is He, Who …designed you, and quite beautifully He

designed you, and provided you livelihood from the

pious things. This is Allah, your Lord. Thus, blessed is Allah,

the Lord of the Universe.” (40:64)

d) “He (Allah) is Ever-Living - no one is to be worshiped but He

(Allah) alone; so worship Him sincerely with total obedience

towards (Him and ) His religion. The praise be to Allah, the

Lord of the universe.” (40:65)

e) “ Say (Holy Prophet): ‘I have been forbidden to worship those

whom you call (i.e. worship) setting aside Allah, when the clear

signs have come to me from my Lord, and I have been

commanded to submit myself totally to the Lord of the

universe.’” (40:66)

f) “ …He (Allah) created the heavens and earth…and subjected to

you the ship…the sun, the moon…the night and the day to serve

you. And gave you every thing that you request Him.”(14:32-34)

g) “ Had there been gods besides Allah in the heavens and earth,

both would have been destroyed…” 921:22
