WORLDLY DESIRES:

1) In the above Verse 3:14, the elements of attraction of this world have been stated. In the Holy Quran, this world has been referred to the vegetation crumbling into pieces with the loss of moisture (18:45; 57:20). Verse No. 18:46 points out that the wealth and children are the beauty of this world, but these are the good deeds only that last with regard to their reward.

2) Islam, in fact, looks for the people, who are above such worldly desires and are ready to sacrifice for the Cause of Allah. In Surah At-Tauba, a warning has been issued to the believers that if they love their fathers, children, relatives, wealth… business… and (beautiful) houses…, more than Allah and His Messenger, and avoid participating in Jihad in His Way, they must then wait till Allah issues His Commandment (about their punishment). (9:24)

3) It does not mean that the believers are forbidden to use the beautiful resources of this world. In fact, these are (basically) meant for the believers in this world and will be exclusively for them on the Day of Judgement. (7:32). The point is that they must be ready to distract themselves from the worldly attachment for the sake of Allah and His Messenger, and must keep themselves above the beauty and luxury of this life.

4) a) The Holy Prophet said:

“The world is a prison to the believer, and paradise to the non-believer.”

(Muslim – Mishkat: 4929)

b) The Holy Quran states:

“And the life of this world is nothing but just (a little game) and fun.

And, indeed, the home of the Last World is the real life…” (29:64)

c)The Holy Messenger was digging the ditch in the Battle of Ahzab and his companions were removing the dirt out by lifting on their shoulders. On seeing them (in such a condition), the Holy Messenger prayed:

“O’ Allah! The real life is the life of the Last World. So (please) forgive (my) Ansar (of Madina) and the refugees (from Mecca) (and grant them Paradise).” (Bukhari:6051) (See also Bukhari:3872)

d) Ibn Masud narrated that (once) the Holy Prophet was sleeping on a (simple) mat, and when he got up, there were impressions on his body. Ibn Masud (on seeing him in such a condition) submitted: ‘ If you order us, we will spread a proper bed for you.’ The Holy Prophet replied:

“ I have nothing to gain from this world. My relationship with this

world is like a rider staying under the shadow of a tree (on his way).

On getting up, he moves ahead, leaving the tree behind.”

(Ahmad, Tirmizi, Ibn Majah - Mishkat:4959)

e) Abdullah bin Umar narrated that the Holy Prophet advised him by holding his shoulders:

“ Live in this world like a wayfarer.”

(Bukhari:6053)

1) It may be noted also that wealth has, of course, been stated to be the Mercy of Allah in the Holy Quran. (See 17:28,100; 18:82).

The Holy Prophet said: “…Ka’d-al-faqra anyakoona kufran …”

[It is quite likely that ‘faqr’ (poverty) may become (the basis for) ‘kufr’

(disbelief)…” (Mishkat:4828)]

[Note: The next Verse states Allah’s Great Witness about His Oneness.]
