3:7-3:9 MUHKAMA’T & MUTASHABIHA’T
(Clear & Unclear Verses)
3:7 “ It is He (Allah), who revealed to you (Holy Prophet) the Book (Al-Quran). There are in it Muhkama’t (clear solid) Verses that are the mother (pillars, foundations) of the Book; and there are others which seem to be unclear (Mutashabiha’t). Thus, those having wickedness in their hearts follow (and insist upon) the ambiguity hidden therein so as to look for ‘Fitnah’ (trouble) (with a view to revert the believers) and (rather than interpreting them under the light of the clear Verses) give a different (and an evil) interpretation. And none knows their (true) interpretation except Allah and those having sound (and deep rooted) knowledge [ OR, none knows their (true) interpretation except Allah, and those having sound (and deep rooted) knowledge] say: ‘ We believe (sincerely) in (all of) them. All (Verses) are from our Lord. And none learn from it except the people of wisdom.”
[Note: Al-Quran states about the scholars having sound knowledge:
“ But they, who are sound (and deeply rooted in knowledge) from amongst them (i.e. the Jews) (like Abdullah bin Sala’m) as well as the believers (Muslims) believe in what has been sent down (i.e. Al-Quran) to you (Holy Prophet) and (also believe in) which was sent down before…(4:162)]
3:8 “ Such people (deeply rooted in knowledge) pray: ‘ Our Lord! Our hearts may not deviate after you have guided us, and grant us Mercy from Yourself. Of course, You are most bountiful.”
3:9 “ (They further pray) ‘ Our Lord! Indeed, You will gather the mankind together on the Day of Judgement, about which there is no doubt, at all.’ Of course, Allah goes not against His promise.”

MUTASHABIHA’T:
i) These are only the disobedient and the trouble- makers, who are misled by Mutshabiha’t. The Holy Quran states:
“…With it (i.e. through the Verses of Al-Quran such as those
of Mutshabiha’t) He (Allah ) misguides many and also guides
many others. And He misguides only those, who are
Fasiqeen - they are those, who break away their promise with
Allah (such as the Jews)…and create trouble on earth…” (2:26)
ii) The Verses about Mutashabiha’t (unclear Verses) support the Verses which are Muhkama’t (clear Verses), since there is no discrepancy or contradiction in Al-Quran. Almighty Allah states:
“Don’t they then think deeply in Al-Quran? And had it been from
other than Allah, they surely would have found many contradictions
in it?” (4:82)
[The unclear Verses must be interpreted in the light of the clear Verses.]
iii) The Holy Quran states further:
“ Have you not seen those (Jews), who were given a portion of the
Book? They (just) purchase misguidance (from it) and intend to
deviate you(O’Muslims) from the Right Path.” (4:44)
iv) The Holy Prophet recited the above Verse (3:7) on Muhkama’t & Mutashabihat and then said: “When you see the people following
‘Mutashabiha’t, know that they are the people stated by Allah
(as misled) in this Verse. So you must keep yourselves away from
them.” (Bukhari:4273)
