CHAPTER 3

SURAH Aal-e-IMRAN

Introduction:

1. Proofs for the Christians:

In the previous Surah or Chapter on Al-Baqarah, the proofs about the Messenger-ship of our Holy Prophet (Muhammad ) were given to the people particularly the Jews so that they may believe in him. In this chapter on Aal-e-Imran, the proofs about him have been particularly provided to the Christians, who fabricated the concept of ‘Trinity of God’. After providing necessary proofs against such a false concept, the Holy Prophet finally came out towards them along with his close family members on the Commandment of Almighty Allah and challenged them (3:61,Zia-ul-Quran) to bring out their close family members like wise and let all of them pray to Almighty Allah to curse (punish) those who were the liars. The Christians were scared and did not come out to accept the challenge, since they surely realized that they would be destroyed along with their families for their false idea of ȁTrinity of God’. With such a concept, the Christians believed that Jesus Christ was the son of God as well as one of three gods.

2. Human Rights in Islam:

All human beings are equal. They, by their nature, submit to none, but Almighty Allah. This is the nature (message) of the Religion of Islam, too. No one can, thus, enslave them. All are slaves of Almighty Allah. It is the worship and Law of Allah that is to be established on earth. The Prophets, who were granted the Book and Power, strongly preached that the people should become slaves of Almighty Allah and that He alone should be worshipped (3:79). How can then any human being, no matter how strong he is, such as a king, caliph, sultan or any head of state, can enslave the people and usurp their rights? It may be noted that our Holy Prophet was instructed in this Surah (Aal-e-Imran) to consult the believers in the matters (relating to the State) (3:159). The Muslims also consult among themselves, while running the State (42:38). Any Muslim Government that implements the Commandments of Allah is an Islamic Government. Further, the last Verses of this Surah particularly speak about the equal reward of deeds for Muslim men and women in an Islamic society as well as in the Hereafter, when Almighty Allah commanded:

“… I (Allah) will not, at all, destroy the deeds of any of you, may thatperson be a male or female…So those who …were expelled from theirhomes, and who fought and were martyred…I will definitely admitthem to the (Everlasting) Gardens (of Paradise)…” (3:195)

3 Miracles of Jesus Christ:

A brief history about the piety of Jesus Christ’s mother has also been stated in this Surah. The splendid birth and miracles of Jesus Christ were also clearly stated, while giving proofs about the Oneness of Almighty Allah. (3:33-66)

4. When Al-Baqarah was being revealed, the Muslims were permitted and commanded to fight the non-believers, so as to save their religion and the State of Al- Madina. (2:190-195, 216-218). The Battle of Badr was, accordingly, fought during the period of revelation of Surah Al-Baqarah. The Muslims received a splendid victory with the Blessings of Almighty Alah in Al-Badr (3:13,123).

5. During the period of revelation of this Surah on Aal-e-Imran, the battle of Uhad was fought. The Muslims emerged victorious in the beginning, but received a set back due to the disobedience of a group of Muslims for violating the Orders of the Holy Prophet. This Surah warned them about their disobedience and ordered them to rectify their attitude. Again the Holy Prophet was instructed to ignore their blunders, seek forgiveness for them and consult them in the matters (of war and of the State). (3:120-186). The set back also prepared the Muslims to face the non- believers carefully and courageously in the battles ahead.
