2:280, 281 LENIENCY TOWARDS THE DEBTOR

2:280 “ And if the debtor is hard pressed, give him time till he can back easily; and if you give him the charity (and remit loan), it is better for you if you know it.”

2:281 “ And fear the Day (of Judgement) when you shall return to Allah. Then every one will be paid what he earned, and no injustice will be inflicted upon them.”

The Holy Prophet said:

a) “ A business man used to give loans to the people. Whenever, he

observed any of them as hard pressed, he instructed his men

to forgive him (i.e. not to take the loan back) so that Allah may

forgive us. Accordingly, Allah forgave him (after his death).”

(Bukhari:1972)

b) “ When any of you gives loan to some one, and the borrower sends

him a gift or offers him a ride, he must neither get a ride nor

accept the gift (from him) except when the exchange of gifts has

been taking place between them before.”

(Ibn Majah, Baihqi - Mishkat:2708)

c) “ May Allah bestow His Mercy on the person, who is lenient in

selling and buying and while claiming (his money).”

(Bukhari - Mishkat:2670)

d) The Holy Prophet(peace be upon him) often sought refuge of Allah

from debt. When asked, he replied: “ The debtor, when he speaks, tells

a lie; and when he makes a promise, he breaches it.” (Bukhari:2267)
