b) ‘Nazr’ is a commitment made with Almighty Allah, and must, therefore, be fulfilled. (The commitment made with Allah must be fulfilled, otherwise the person will be punished. See 2:27;3:77). Some people, however, put them into trouble with ‘Nazr. Let us see:
Ans narrated that a man was walking in between his two sons by
putting his hands on their shoulders. The Holy Prophet (peace be
upon him) asked the people about him. They submitted: ‘ He
has committed ‘Nazr’ to walk down to the House of Allah.’
The Holy Prophet (peace be upon him)said:
“ Allah does not care for his putting himself to trouble.” He then
ordered him to ride. Abu Hurairah, however, narrated that the
Holy Prophet(peace be upon him) said: “ Old man! Ride, because
Allah does not care for you and for your ‘Nazr’.”
(Mishkat:3284)
(See also Bukhari:6323)
c) The Holy Prophet said further regarding ‘Nazr’:
1. “ Don’t commit ‘Nazr’ (or vow), because ‘Nazr’ can’t repel
preordainment (Taqdeer), and through ‘Nazr’ wealth is extracted
from a miser (for the poor).” (Bukhari:6315)
2. “ Whosoever commits ‘Nazr’ for obeying Allah, he must obey
Allah; and whosoever commits ‘Nazr’ to disobey Him, he must
not disobey Him.” (Bukhari6318)
3.“ Almighty Allah says: ‘ The son of Adam can’t get any thing
through ‘Nazr’ which has not been preordained for him. With
&Nazr’ he can get only what has been preordained for him.
Nevertheless, through ‘Nazr’ Allah pulls out from a miser for
spending (on the poor). With ‘Nazr’, the miser gives Me (Allah)
(i.e. spends on the poor), which he does not give before ‘Nazr’.’”
(Bukhari:6316)
4. The Holy Prophet
was (once) delivering ‘Khutba’ (lecture) , when he saw a man standing there. On asking, the people submitted: ‘ He is Abu Israel. He has committed ‘Nazr’ (vow) for standing and not sitting, avoiding shadow as well as talking, and for observing fast.’ The Holy Prophet
instructed the people to order him to talk, sit under a shadow, and complete his fast. (Bukhari:6326)
