2:268 FEAR OF POVERTY

“ ‘Shataan’ (Satan, devil) frightens you about poverty (for not spending in the Way of Allah) and orders you to commit shameful* acts, whereas Allah promises you about His Forgiveness and Graciousness. And Allah is All Bountiful, knowing every thing.”

* Niggardly act: The devil frightens us that by spending in the Way of Allah, you will become poor, but at the same time, he incites us to spend money for committing sins and shameful acts. Note that a rich person becomes shameless when he spends on himself luxuriously and shuts his eyes from the poor for not spending on them. Consequently, the niggardly act is a shameful deed, as indicated in the above Verse.

The Holy Prophet said:

a) “ Two qualities can’t gather together in a believer i.e. the niggardly

act and immorality.” (Tirmizi – Mishkat:1778)

b) “ The two worst qualities in a man are the extreme niggardly act and

extreme cowardice.” (Abu Daud –Mishkat:1780)

2:269 ‘AL-HIKMAH’

“ He (Allah) grants ‘Hikmah’ (i.e. the excellent knowledge based upon wisdom) whom He wills; and whosoever has been granted ‘Hikmah’, he has been given virtue in abundance. And only the intelligent (and wise) people learn (a lesson) from it.”

2:270 ‘NAZR’

“And whatever you spend or whatever ‘Nazr’ (or vow) you commit, Allah knows it all; and there is no supporter for the unjust people.”

* ‘NAZR’ (VOW (or Commitment with Allah):

The following points may be noted in this connection:

a) Peer Karam Shah in Zial-ul-Quran under 2:270 has stated on the authority of Al-Qurtabi that ‘Nazr’ is (defined as) a kind of worship so that if any one does not commit, it is not essential (‘Fard’) for him.
