2:246 - 252 TALU’T, JAL’UT & PROPHET DAUD
[SAUL, GOLIATH & PROPHET DAVID]
Prophet Samuel:
2:246 “ Have you not observed the dignitaries of the Descendents of Israel, after (Prophet) Musa, when they requested their Prophet (Samuel) to appoint for them a leader for fighting in the Way of Allah. He replied: ‘ Probably you may not fight, when Jihad is made obligatory for you.’ They submitted that there was no reason for them for not participating in Jihad in the Way of Allah, when they had been expelled from their houses and (also) separated from their sons (who were made as captives by the enemy). But when Jihad was made obligatory for them, they turned away excepting a few of them. And Allah is All-Aware of ‘Zalimun’ (who are unjust).”
Appointment of Talut (Saul) as Leader:
2:247 “ And their Prophet said to them: ‘Indeed, Allah has appointed Talut (Saul) as your leader.’ They submitted how could he lead them when they had more right than him and that he had not been given enough wealth.’ He (i.e. their Prophet) replied: ‘Of course, Allah has selected him against you, and that He granted him an abundant knowledge and physical power. And Allah grants His Kingdom to whom He wills. And Allah provides in abundance, and is Aware of every thing.” (See also 7:69; 11:27)
[Note: They then asked about the sign of his kingdom.]
