2:223 WIFE - AN AGRICULTURAL SOIL

2:223 “ Wives are like the agricultural soil for you; so come to your soil, when you wish, and send ahead for your selves (i.e. do not forget to perform good deeds) (and pray for having pious children). And fear Allah, and know that you surely will meet Him (in the World Hereafter); and (Holy Prophet) give happy news to the believers (about the result of their good deeds and pious children).

The Holy Quran states in 7:58, as below:

“And the soil which is pure, yields its (beautiful) vegetation

(in abundance) with the Permission of Allah; but the soil

which is bad, produces nothing but little and weedy…” (7:58)

It means that if wife is pure and good (i.e. a believing woman with good deeds), she will produce good children and will provide pure environment for their growth. On the other hand, if she is filthy and dirty (like a Mushrikah), she will produce and bring up nothing but bad offspring.

2:224 ,225 -OATH

2:224 “And do not make Allah’s Name just to pretend by taking an oath for not doing good, nor performing any pious act, and nor reconciling the people. And Allah is All-Hearer, knowing every thing.”

2:225 “Allah will not hold you for the oaths that you made without any intention; but He will hold you responsible for the oaths that you made with the intention emerging from your hearts. And Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Forbearing.”

The Holy Prophet said:

a) “…If I swear about a certain matter, and then find a better way out, I will expiate for it and adopt the way which is better.” (Bukhari:6249)

b) “By Allah! If any of you insists on his oath that may harm his family, he commits a greater sin in the Sight of Allah than (breaking his oath and) making an expiation for it.” (Bukhari:6250)

Note: The expiation for breaking the oath is to feed ten poor persons or to fast for three days. (Tafseer Zia-ul-Quran under 2:224)
