The Mushrikeen (Polytheists) of Mecca and the Jews of Madina exploited the above fighting incident by stating that Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his Companions created bloodshed, carried out robbery, and captured the people in the sacred month. It was, thus, on their false propaganda that the above Verse 2:217 was revealed, which removed fear from the hearts of the Muslims. Abdullah bin Jahsh and his fellows then submitted to the Holy Prophet
in such words: ‘ May we hope to get the reward as Mujahideen (i.e. those who fight in the Way of Allah).’ In response, thereof, Verse No. 2:218, as above, was revealed to the Holy Prophet

The Holy Quran states also:
& And kill them where ever you catch them, and expel them from where
they have expelled you. And Al-Fitnah (creating resistance for not
accepting Islam or torturing the believers for reverting them from
Islam) is worse than killing. And do not fight them near Masjid-e-Haram,
unless they first fight you there. Thus, if they fight you (there),
kill them. This is the (right) punishment for the non- believers.” (2:191)
The Next Verses:
The Islamic society requiring hectic struggle (Jihad) in the Way of Allah, cannot tolerate that its people should become lazy, sluggish and shameless. It also cannot allow the people to waste away their money on luxurious drinking and on other intoxicants. Accordingly, there is no place of such things in this society. On the other hand, Islam emphasizes that the savings from the hard-earned money be spent to the maximum in the Way of Allah, particularly in Jihad. Again, the savings must also be spent on the welfare of orphans / widows left alone especially with the martyrdom of their fathers / husbands. Keeping these facts in view, now study the next Verses 2:219 & 2:220, which deal with intoxicants, spending (as in Jihad), and welfare of orphans.
