By the word observation, I don’t mean mere seeing, but perceiving things with all the senses like vision, hearing, smell, taste, touch and sixth sense if you believe in sixth sense. Good observations are useful in any modern field to become a successful person in that field.
Actually every one in this world observes, from child hood onwards, with his observation power he gains knowledge about his environment, but by the time he reaches adult hood his observation power declines. So his ability and knowledge gaining power also declines that way.
Your observations can make a difference only if you find things in a situation that others cannot find. There you can differentiate the observations into ordinary observation, good observation or great observation. You may only be rewarded with your good or great observation if you possess good analyzing power also.
Sight accounts for 90 to 95 percent of all sensory perceptions with 130 million rod cells for black and white vision and 7 million cone cells for colour vision in retina. Field of vision, which can be defined as how much of the world we can see without moving our head, of humans are about 180 degrees of a circle if measured laterally where as for a horse it is about 215 degrees. In mankind binocular vision is about 140 degrees out of a total of about 180 degrees.
Now talking few things about watching other fellow human beings, which can be called, in a broad sense, a part of observation. Watching makes more sense when confined to opposite sex and with narrow deviation of age from the age of person who is looking. And if you believe the beauty of watching others lays in the fact that the other person doesn’t know that, then the following are few points which has to be noted. Field of vision of females are slightly more than males, so be aware males! One of the way to detect whether a person is using the advantage of this lateral vision from side view is to look for the black or brown iris of eyes. If that person is a little far from you so that you cannot appreciate his or her eyes then look whether his or her neck is stiff and head straightened a little bit than normal. You can check the above method by asking your friend to sit in such a way that you are seeing your friends side view of face. Now ask him or her to first look straight, you will be seeing the white sclera of his or her eyes. Then ask your friend to look at you with out turning his or her head, you will be seeing the black or brown part of her eyes which is the iris. A person wearing spectacles having lens of power more than - 0.5 dioptres will not be able use the advantage of this lateral vision that efficiently. The next point which has to be noted while watching is don’t stare at the eyes of strangers for more than 10 seconds because human race being a dominating animal shows his white sclera of the eye all the time when compared to animals which shows that only during aggression. White sclera will be more prominent when you stare and so message conveyed will not be what you want. The next point is one which is a good tool for watching but I found a little people using it, that is looking the mirrors or dark glasses in front of shops and side glasses of car which provide sufficiently clear image to at least understand what’s happening around us if direct vision is difficult. Another thing which lot of people doesn’t take care of while watching is the lighting of the surrounding. If you are on the darker side you are on the safe side, for example if you are watching a person from a room where there is only dim light compared to outside then the person outside cannot identify that easily where you are looking. And the last point which is fairly important is that every body in this world loves to be get noticed and be in limelight, at least deep in their mind. For those who think they are constantly watched by a person and so your every steps will be noticed and he or she will be thinking of you all the time, forget it! Who in this world has that much time except when he or she is in love with you.
A person with good observation power personally will soon develop a habit of thinking practically, and he will be always eager to know things happening around him. I will not say this eagerness will be advantageous in every situation because at times this eagerness will let you know certain awkward things, which is happening around you, and you will find people living happily in same situations because they are not aware of that. You may not be proud of having good observation at that time; instead you may wish not to have it. You may also be condemned by others. At this point of time it will be better to remember the words of George Bernard Shaw; “The power of accurate observation is often called cynicism by those who have not got it.”
Note:- Short sightedness or myopia in children must be detected and corrected as soon as possible not merely in the interest of their eyes but also in the interest of their mental development. Children with even low degrees of uncorrected myopia cannot be expected to take normal interest in their surroundings since they cannot see distant objects clearly as their fellows. Their mental horizon will be constricted soon and they will not take interest in normal work.
