Scene 4
An anteroom in the courthouse.
AT RISE: Hunyak is being interrogated by her lawyer (AARON) and the MATRON is acting as her interpreter with a Hungarian-English Dictionary in hand. The scene obviously has been going on for some time. It is also obvious that that Aaron is impatient with his client’s stubbornness and her inability to speak "American.)"

MATRON: (To Aaron.)
I’m sorry, Aaron. She still says "No."

AARON:
Jesus Christ, don’t she know she’ll be convicted?

HUNYAK:
Uncle Sam jò és igazagos, ö nem fog börtönbe csukni, mert artatlan vagyok.

MATRON:
She says Uncle Sam is just and fair and he wouldn’t put her in jail because she’s innocent. Aaron, I think she’s telling the truth.

AARON:
What the hell has innocence got to do with it? Look, Mrs. Morton, this is a court appointed thing. I don’t get anything from this. Nothing!

MATRON:
Whaddya want from me? I’ve done my best.

HUNYAK: (With difficulty.)
Not…guilty.

AARON:
Goddam foreign hunky nut.

HUNYAK:
Fogot tetszeni Uncle Sam-nek?

MATRON:
She says will Uncle Sam like her?

AARON:
I don’t give a Goddamn what she says unless it’s "guilty."

HUNYAK:
Not…guilty.

BAILIFF:
He’s ready for you.

MATRON: (To HUNYAK)
Well, here you go.

HUNYAK:
Not guilty. Not guilty. Not guilty Uncle Sam.

MATRON:
And now, ladies and gentlemen, for your pleasure and entertainment - we proudly present… the one… the only Miss Katalin Hunyak and her famous Hungarian rope trick.
(Hunyak disappears off stage. Drum roll, crescendo, cymbal crash. A noose falls on the top platform)

ANNOUNCER:
After 47 years a Cook County precedent has been shattered. Katalin Hunyak was hanged tonight for the brutal axe murder of her husband. The Hungarian woman’s last words were, "Not guilty."
