Guide to the Technocracy MET conversion

This cannot be a complete list or a direct word for word recopying of the information found in the tabletop Guide to the Technocracy but I hope it will serve as a reference for things to think about.

New Archetypes:
In addition to the common Archetypes listed in Laws of Ascension and other "Laws" books certain types of people seem to gravitate toward the Union. The following Archetypes are often present within the Technocratic Union.

Benefactor, Caretaker, Crusader, Devil's Advocate, Entertainer, Hacker, Innovator, Investigator, Machine, Mad Scientist, Manager, Misfit, Penitent, Perfectionist, Quester, Sneak, Tycoon and Vigilante.

New Abilities:
Some of these Abilities fall within the Hobby/Professional/Expert Ability, are written up elsewhere in the MET system books or are specialties on an existing Ablity.

  • Academics Concentrations: Anthropology, Ethnology, Fine Arts, History, Logic, Philosophy
  • Acting (Specialty of Expression)
  • Biotech (A possible Science specialty or concentration or possibly Medicine)
  • Conspiracy Theory (Academics Specialty)
  • Construct Politics (Politics Specialty)

  • Energy Weapons (use for retests with Laser Pistols, Plasma Cannons and the like instead of Firearms)
  • Helmsman (A variation on Drive applicable to spacecraft)
  • Hypertech (the ability to understand the Enlightened Science behind the machines of the Technocracy. At higher levels [4 and above] it may be used to understand the devices of the Sons of Ether and Virtual Adepts)
  • Interrogation
  • Jetpack (Another variation of Drive)
  • Jury-Rig (A possible version of Blatancy for the Technocracy. Normally requires knowledge of Technology, Computer, Gunsmithing, Hypertech, Biotech, Security, Energy Weapons and many Sciences in addition to this Ability to justify a Vulgar effect as Coincidental. A favorite of MacGuyver fans.)
  • Law Enforcement (Possible Law Specialty) See also Police Procedure.
  • Media
  • Microgravity Operations (Athletics Specialty applicable in Zero-G)
  • Negotiation (Empathy Specialty)
  • Newspeak (A possible Linguistics specialty)
  • Networking (Politics Specialty)

  • Propaganda
  • Psychology
  • RD Data (Lore: Traditions, Lore: Vampire, Lore: Ghosts, etc.)
  • Science Concentrations: Astronomy, Biology, Biopsychology, Chemistry, Cybernetics, Electronics, Engineering, Forensic Pathology, Genetics, Geology, Hypermathmatics, Mathematics, Metallurgy, Paraphysics, Phylogeny, Physics, Psychodynamics, Sociobiology, Xenobiology
  • Subdimesions (the Technocracy version of Cosmology)
  • Security
  • Torture (Interrogation Specialty, but sometimes it stands on its own)
  • Vice (Specialty of Steetwise)

  • New Backgrounds:
Not all of these are new, but some are referred to by new names within the Technocracy. For those without additional explanation see the version in Laws of Ascension for description.

Note: The following backgrounds can be considered to be provided by the Union and may be revoked at any time by Control: Allies, Backup, Devices, Enhancements, Influence, Mentor, Node, Patron, Requisitions, Resources, Secret Weapons and Spies.

  • Allies
  • Backup: Use the description of Retainers from Laws of the Night, Revised.
  • Cloaking (Arcane)
  • Companion (Familiar): I'll be handling this on a case by case basis, mostly with input from Ascension's Right Hand and the Book of Shadows.
  • Destiny
  • Device (Wonder)
  • Enhancement: Either Cybernetics or Genegineering that make you more than human...for a price. Handled on a case by case basis and needs to be monitored carefully for abuse and min/maxing. This background may only be purchased up to five. Go here for more information.
  • Genius (Avatar)
  • Hypercram (Dream)
  • Influence: The normal spread of 15 areas.
  • Laboratory (Sanctum): A semi-private area where all Technocratic Procedures are always coincidental. It also possesses Cloaking equal to it's rating. Gauntlet is always 9 both for Spirit and Dimensional Science.
  • Library
  • Patron (Mentor)
  • Repository (Node)
  • Requisitions: Similar to Resources, but applicable only within the Union to access goods, services and personnel.
  • Resources
  • Secret Weapons: An experimental Device that is temporarily assigned to you for testing. Good Luck!
  • Spies (Contacts)

  • New Merits and Flaws:
I'll be considering any of the Merits and Flaws found in the back of Mage: the Ascension Revised for conversion to Live Action especially if they have already been written up before elsewhere (i.e. Acute Sense, Iron Will, Ability Aptitude, etc.) In addition to these and others that may be found in the Laws of the Night: Revised, The Camarilla Guide and The Sabbat Guide, here are some Merits and Flaws specific to the Technocracy.

      Merits:
  • Unobtrusive (1)
  • Acute Sense (1)
  • License to... (1-5)
  • Confidence (2) MET: 2 traits up on Social tests involving Leadership or Subterfuge
  • Officially Dead (2)
  • Poker Face (2) MET: See the Akashic Brotherhood Advantage for mechanics of this Merit.
  • Iron Will (4)
  • Perfect Liar (3) MET: Retest any successful use of Subterfuge against you.
  • Ties (3) Spend it on a Specific Influence instead.
  • Master of Red Tape (4) MET: Lowers the difficulty level of Contacts, Influences, Resources, etc. needed to obtain items by two. For example a Master of Red Tape needs only University 2 to "DISCREDIT A FACULTY MEMBER" something that normally takes University 4. May be revoked if the character is not not doing his part to keep the ways of easy access clear.
  • Inner Knight (5) MET: Acts as a Past Life of an ancient Daedalean. May provide up to 5 Traits in almost any area for a few minutes at a time along with visions of being a crusader, knight, artist, or alchemist.
    • Flaws:
  • Technobabble (1) MET: 1 Trait down on any Social test that doesn't involve Science, Computers, Technology, Medicine or Academics.
  • Bigot (1)
  • Construct (2)
  • Icy (2) MET: See Eerie Presence
  • Rose-Colored Mirrorshades (2)
  • Faulty Enhancements (2-5)
  • Stress Atavism (3) MET: Frenzy-like effects.
  • Demented Eidolon (3)
  • Rotten Liar (3) MET: 2 Traits down on all attempts to deceive others.
  • Mr. Red Tape (4) MET: Opposite of "MASTER OF RED TAPE" It takes two more Traits of any Background or Influence to access items or favors
  • .
  • Rogue (4) MET: Until this flaw is lost, this operative can have no access to many Technocracy backgrounds and perks, i.e. Allies, Backup, Requisitions, Secret Weapons, etc. These backgrounds may either be rescinded or even terminated.
  • Fifth Degree (5)
