The Guardian
Driving down a country lane,
On a dark and stormy night.
A tall dark figure stepped out,
And was silhouetted in the light.
My heart stopped, I braked so hard,
Slid past the place the stranger stood.
I waited for the terrible sound,
Of body, hitting metal hood.
Deafening silence met my ears,
No sound heard but my heartbeat.
Pounding hard within my chest,
I was frozen to my seat.
I took a breath and opened door,
Stepped out, to face my fate.
Who would walk this lonely road,
This place so dark, the hour so late..
Had my eyes deceived me,
I was sure I'd seen someone,
But looking all around now,
The figure, was simply gone..
Perhaps it was a figment,
Of my over active mind,
Or maybe if I looked further,
An injured person, I would find..
I wandered closer to the trees,
And peered into the dark,
Looked straight into pale eyes of green,
They gave me such a start.
With faltered voice I whispered words,
"Are you alright my friend?"
Twin emerald orbs blinked once, then twice,
Oh, would this silence never end..
A distant rumble broke my gaze,
The sound grew deafeningly loud,
I stared out to the road ahead,
And saw a rising, thickening cloud..
As the scene before my eyes unfurled,
Understanding came into my mind,
My heart now filled with sickening fear,
On the road ahead, knew what I'd find.
The bridge that spanned the river,
Once sturdy, strong, secure.
Had in this storm, been washed away,
After a hundred years or more..
I turned back to the stranger,
To offer him my aid,
To see my guardian Angel smile,
No longer was I afraid.
So many questions in my mind,
Who, where, what, when, why?
My guardian simply whispered
"You are safe", and vanished, with a sigh..
