Dear All,
Greetings! It is heartbreaking to hear about the devastating earthquake at Indonesia killing over 3000 people. The country that was hit very hard just a year ago by Tsunami is again in trouble because of Mother Nature. We at DreamIndia2020 team, pray for the souls of fellow brothers and sisters to rest in peace by observing silence. Please read more about this at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/5022558.stm A few updates on the latest developments. To start with, three teams of same vision joined for a common cause. IndiaVision2020, India Sudar and DreamIndia2020, decided to recruit a teacher for the children home at Shishu Mandir, Dairy Circle, Bangalore, our volunteers visit every week-end. A special thanks to Mr. Siva for all the efforts he took to bring the three teams together to serve this purpose. The plan is a few members from all three teams would share Rs.100 per month to take care of the salary of the teacher. A collective effort by like-minded people for a cause that would serve the nation is sure to have great results, and let us take every such opportunity. Our Chennai team member Mr.Rajender, on behalf of the team, handed the check for Rs.15000 to the young lady, who unfortunately met with an accident by water lorry. The lady is recovering well and team has promised them to collect more funds in case if they require any. We at DreamIndia2020 pray for her complete recovery and request you to join us in the same. You can find the Activities Report by Prasanna on the very good developments at Belapur, Mumbai. From what we see, the classes at Belapur should start very soon and volunteers would get a great chance to make a positive impact on the construction worker's kids. As it has been the case with other places we hope here to the volunteers and kids become part of each others life. The construction work on Pada, Mumbai is going on at full swing. Our team is also planning to meet Mr.Vittal Lad, an Educationist, to discuss about the plans for Pada kids. Mumbai-Borivili classes are also progressing well. You can find the Activties Report by Rohit on Pune teams activities. Chennai and Hyderabad are progressing well. There is still a lot of work to be done at Hyderabad. We are working on it and hope to add more members there soon. We have requested for reports from all cities and would duly share with you all as soon we get that. We have had new members joining us at Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and USA. Wish them all a very warm welcome once again. Regarding the web site, we had a discussion with the development team this week and have decided that by end of June we would have the development and testing done. We should have the site live from July 1st week. Till then we would be meeting you all every week through our forum. Jai Hind!!! |

The task of collecting subscriptions lay with me, I being the secretary. And we came to a stage when I had to keep my clerk engaged all day long in the work of collection. The man got tired of the job, and I felt that, if the situation was to be improved, the subscriptions should be made payable annually and not monthly and that too strictly in advance. So I called for a meeting of the congress. Everyone welcomed the proposal for making the subscription annual instead of monthly and for fixing the minimum at 3 shilling. Thus the work of collection was considerably facilitated. I had learnt at the outset not to carry on public work with borrowed money. One could rely on peoples promises in most matters except in respect of money. I had never found people quick to pay the amounts they had undertaken to subscribe, and the Natal Indians were no exception to the rule. As, therefore, no work was done unless there were funds on hand, the Natal Indian Congress has never been in debt. On one occasion during this tour the situation was rather difficult. We expected our host to contribute 6 shilling, but he refused to give anything more than 3 shilling. If we had accepted that amount from him, others would have followed the suit, and our collections would have been spoiled. It was a late hour of the night, and we were all hungry. But how could we dine without having first obtained the amount we were bent on getting? All persuasion was useless. The host seemed to be adamant. Other merchants in the towns reasoned with him, and we all sat up throughout the night, he as well as we determined not to budge one inch. Most of my co-workers were burning with rage, but they contained themselves. At last, when day was already breaking, the host yielded, paid down 6 shilling and feasted us. This happened at Tongaat, but the repercussion of the incident was felt as far as the Stanger on the North Coast and Charlestown in the interior. It also hastened our work of collection. But collecting funds was not the only thing to do. In fact I had long learnt the principal of never having more money at ones disposal than necessary. To be continued... |
