About The Dramatist

Anup Chakrabarty,a Bengali Indian dramatist and thespian was born of Arabinda Chakrabarty and Kalyani Chakrabarty on 1st January,1955 at Fuleswar in Howrah district of West Bengal.He is a chemistry teacher by profession though he worked as a chemist in a reputed pharmaceutical company for several years after receiving his M.Sc(Chemistry) degree from North Bengal University.

Being inspired by Bhabaranjan Bhattacharya,the playwright and director of Bikshan group he started his theatre activities including play making,acting and direction in his early college life.

He wrote more than thirty plays many of which were published in different theatre and other magazines, namely Pala Natyapatra,Asamayer Natyabhabna,Natyalipika,Theatre Prayag etc. and about all his plays were already produced by Agami and Howrah Uddipan under his own direction, Kalindi Natyasrijan of Kolkata under the direction of Bilwadal Chattopadhyaya and Kolkata Samalay under Anup Kumar Amrito's direction.Kalindi Natyasrijan staged his two full act plays,namely Panyabitangsa and Nonarater Gan several times in Academy of fine arts and Girish Mancha and his another two full act plays,namely Pratyagaman and Samparka were staged by Howrah Uddipan in Muktanggan and Uluberia College's Haripada Mancha.

One of his dramatic monologues "Jishu Khristo,Behula ebang Ami" was his first published play which was acted in different time by Shyamal Dutta,Bilwadal Chattopadhyaya and the dramatist himself and it was published in Pala Natyapatra edited by Shyamal Dutta who published his highly acclaimed offbeat play Anagata also in the same magazine.His play "Amrito Kar" was included in the book "Tinti Ekanka" published by Pala Prakashani.

In last decade of last century his own group Howrah Uddipan was a highly active one and it produced a large number of plays including some classics under his direction where he played the central characters.

All India Radio produced his play "Marmarita Pallabi" under the direction of Dr.Dipak Poddar.

Besides plays he wrote several articles,poems and stories.His book "Duti Ekanka-Anagata o Ashcharya Basanta" is kept in the archive of Natyashodh Sansthan of Kolkata and his play Anagata is available in the archive of the online magazine www.pentasect.com.
