The Frankish fort and city of Mystras is an utterly breathtaking site in the Peloponnese. There are also Byzantine remains to explore, as you walk down the side of the mountain. I took a bus to the top and made my way through the labyrinth of churches, walls, chambers and fort.

Also in the Peloponnese are the excavated remains of Olympia. Set in a verdant valley, the structure of the ancient complex is still  clearly discernible. This line of columns was once part of a colonnaded priest's house. The site includes a temple of Apollo, treasuries, the ancient stadium, altars, Gymnasium, the Fountain House and Roman Baths. It takes a whole day to take it all in.

The town of Mikonos is a dense maze of white washed houses and narrow streets. It is a joy to become completely lost in these tiny avenues, before stumbling across a small church or restaurant or bar. Mikonos is popular, and it is best experienced out of season, when it is possible to savor the unique atmosphere of this Cycladean haven. I took a Greek ferry from Piraeus in March and felt as if I was the only tourist on the island.
