Chile

The southern coast of Chile is a wonderfully untouched and remote region of fiords and wildlife. Dolphins, seals and sea lions, sea birds and penguins are
abundant.

This church is on the island of Chiloe, in the town of Achao. The Spanish used local Indians to build their monuments. The Indians obliged with their particular method of construction, which is to use wood throughout the building. The churches of Chiloe are all in the same style, and it is possible to visit them easily, as the island is relatively flat, with roads and bus services. Some of the island churches act as places of pilgrimage.

One of the most important activities of southern Chile is fishing. These boats fish in the many waterways that lead to the Pacific Ocean. This area is extremely rich in sea life. One of the great pleasures of traveling through this section of Chile is the selection of  fresh and delicious sea produce.
