Ridley Scottīs classic science fiction story, Blade Runner, takes the fictional work of Philip K Dick, and turns it into a visual feast. This is a world complete in itself. The constant rain, global language, total intermingling of cultures and fight between humans and machines, are all universal postmodern themes. Blade Runner is a film that deserves repeated watching.

Luis Buņuel made The discreet charm of the bourgeoisie in 1972. It follows the adventures of a group of party goers, who are constantly trying to sit down to have dinner together. However, their enjoyment is permanently interrupted by surreal and bizarre happenings. This film moves majestically between scenes, with dialogue, reminisces, flashback and story. It is a dazzling and sophisticated masterpiece.

Luchino Visconti interpreted Thomas Mann's novel Death in Venice, in 1971. Undoubtedly the choice of Mahler as the soundtrack was excellent. When Aschenbach realizes that he has to go back to cholera infested Venice because of the boy, the moment is emphasized on his boat by the introduction of Mahler. The memorable beach shot also ranks high in cinematic moments.

The Devils was a film that allowed Ken Russell to explore religious mania. Made in 1971, Russell used the play of John Whiting and Huxley's, The Devils of Loudun, to make what is at times a remarkable film. The script uses religious language to give an authentic flavor to the happenings. The setting is suitable dramatic, as are the performances of Vanessa Redgrave and Oliver Reed.
