Downey 50s A-frame and Tiki-inspired commercial buildings
see them while they still exist!
Tahitian
Soaring roofline on this real estate office
is reminiscent of the "Tahitian Village"
A-frame
Welcoming entrance to this strip mall
new listing: Aloha
"Exotical" sells Hawaiian shirts and Luau apparel.  An appropriate "tiki-style" retailer for this modified a-frame entrance.  On Firestone Boulevard.
The Nordic Fox Restaurant
Alpine A-frame
Built by an architect from Lake Arrowhead in 1960s, who borrowed the Alpine cabin theme used in the mountains.
The interior still retains original touches, such as unique wood-covered walls, rope cieling details and a fantastic space-age fireplace set into the a-frame glass walls.  According to the proprietor, a second, identical restaurant was built in Glendale.  However the interior of that one has since been remodled.  There is possibly a third identical building in Goleta, part of the Twin Lakes Golf Club.
The menu features Scandinavian food (like Abelskivers) and American breakfast fare.  In the front is there is a small selection of Viking-kitsch gifts (such as 70s troll dolls). On Paramount Boulevard.
The Rockview Farms Drive-Thru
50s Ranch-style Convenience
One of several Rockview Farms drive-thru milk stations in the area, this barn-inspired one, on Tweedy Avenue in Downey, is the best.  According to the operators, next year the building will be "replaced with a new one."  I contacted Rockview Farms corporate (based in Downey, they are also the suppliers of "Trader Joe's" brand milk) and found out this was "individually owned and operated" so stop by and tell the current owners to save the place.
Some interesting churches...
New post:
There are several "exuberant" mid-century churches in the city...here a some examples; though the one on the upper right may be more recent, the others are definitely something out of the 1950s or 1960s.
more atomic-era commercial buildings...

Sign Of Progress
Downey Studios (still under construction in the foreground).  Notice the "Boeing-style" font and the large painting of the moon.  Nice reference to Downey's history with the space program.  And a great re-use of the old Boeing-NASA site.
