| TENKI YOHO NO KOIBITO Episode One

It's early in the morning and everyone is rushing off to work. Yano Katsuhiko (Sato Koichi) is taking his daughter, Yukimi, to school while Harada Sachi (Inamori Izumi) is taking her son, Tatsuya, and both are running late. Kaneko Shoko (Fukatsu Eri) is still in bed, and she is woken by her mother calling about an omiai for her, which she turns down. At the Weather Bureau where Yano works, his junior co-worker Taguchi is listening to "Yuikawa Sachi's" radio program: Niji no Cinderella (Cinderella at 2 o'clock). He is an ardent fan and is mesmerised by what is actually Shoko's voice telling her viewers the story of a young girl transformed by love and encouraging people to "fall in love and change your life"... As she is talking, the *real* Sachi is working in the caf, listening to her program. Yano is amused by Taguchi's enthusiasm but when Taguchi shows him the program's homepage, he refused to be impressed, saying that Sachi can't be all that great if she won't even show her face on her homepage. (The photo shows her profile, and Sachi's face is deliberately averted.) After Shoko finishes her program, her producer Kawamura asks her to get Harada Sachi to pose for some new pictures that they can pose on their homepage. Shoko goes downstairs to the caf where Sachi is working as a waitress and Sachi happily agrees. They then go off and a photographer takes some nice outdoor shots of Sachi twirling around and the homepage is updated with the new photos. At work, Taguchi asks Yano about his divorce and Yano tells him that his wife said to him that while he can predict the weather accurately, he'll never be able to predict (understand) a woman's emotions. Taguchi, who is very keen on "go-kons" ("group dating" where a guy will bring his single friends and a girl will bring her single friends and they'll go out for a meal, drinks, etc.) and is always trying to date women, tries to get Yano to go with him to a go-kon, but Yano is not interested and says he's happy with things as they are. That night, Sachi goes off to her evening job hostessing at a club called the Glass Slipper. When resting in the back room with her co-workers, she's watching the weather program and tells her colleague that when she was younger, she'd wanted to be a weather forecaster... and also a radio DJ, but she's not smart enough. After work, she goes to pick up her son, Tatsuya, from the daycare centre. When Yano gets home, he notices that Yukimi has left her bag at his place and he calls his ex-wife Junko to arrange to give it back to her. He meets Junko at a caf the next day, and she tells him to get a life, saying that he can't be selfish in wanting to hog his daughter's free time just because he's lonely. She suggests that he try dating again, but seems to doubt his ability to do so. But she makes a joke that if he did find someone else, she would try to get him back, because then it would mean that the failure of their marriage could be her fault and not his. (Ed. note: self-obsessed, egocentric bitch!) Taguchi faxes in a request to the radio show to meet Yuikawa Sachi and his request is granted by Kawamura. Shoko is livid when she finds out, but then agrees to ask Sachi to *pose* as herself. Sachi doesn't mind at all and seems rather curious to meet this "fan". Shoko says he's probably some loser and Sachi agrees to help Shoko discourage him from bothering her again. But she worries that she may not be able to discourage him and still leave a good impression, as Shoko requested. Shoko decides to accompany her on the "date", posing as her AD (assistant). One of Taguchi's co-workers at the weather bureau called Sudou Ikuko (a bespectacled woman who seems rather bad-tempered and scary and keeps darting mean looks at Taguchi) deliberately changes his schedule so he is unable to make the date, and Taguchi asks Yano to go in his place. Yano is reluctant, but under Taguchi's pleas, he agrees. Yano is waiting for Sachi at the restaurant, and when the two of them, Sachi and Shoko, show up, they're both agreeably surprised by his appearance. Sachi is happily tucking into the food and wine, and she becomes rather garrulous with wine and carelessly making a comparison between the food here and at her "mise" (shop - meaning where she works) but Shoko covers up her mistake and says Sachi's family runs a shop. Yano asks Sachi about her program, but she's unable to give much of a response as that's not what she really does. Halfway through the meal, it starts to rain, and Sachi makes a comment about how much she likes the rain and the way it smells. Yano tells her that rain actually has no smell, and the smell comes from the soil after rain falls on it, and he gets quite enthusiastic on the subject, going on about how the rain's smell used to be referred to as the "rainbow's scent". Both Sachi and Shoko seems very absorbed by his talk, but then he tells them that the rain will actually stop soon. They're both impressed by his forecast, but he tells them that it's actually done by computer now, unlike in his father's day, when they used to have to rely on their sixth sense as well as on facts. He tells them this story about how his father, also a weather forecaster, used to know when it would just be a short rain-shower; he would then arrange to take them to the amusement park afterwards, and it would be a lot less crowded than on regular sunny days... only the seats would be wet! Sachi suggests that they go to the amusement park after lunch, and the three of them head there, although Shoko's kind of reluctant, as she's worried Sachi will give the game away. But the three of them - buoyed up by Sachi's enthusiasm - have a good time going on the rides and while Sachi is off to buy ice-cream cones, Yano makes a comment to Shoko about how Sachi is very cheerful and happy-go-lucky, not at all like the stuffy person (with an inferiority complex!) that he'd expected her to be. Shoko's quite indignant at his comments, but suddenly he looks at her and says that she reminds him of a "lesser panda"... Sachi and Shoko are walking back together, and Sachi says that she finds Yano really nice and it's the first time she's been on a date with a guy who thought she was smart and not just cute. At home, Shoko checks on the Internet to see what a "lesser panda" looks like, and is agreeably surprised to find it quite cute-looking. But then she compares her own face in the mirror and says grumpily that it doesn't resemble her at all. Meanwhile, Sachi's in bed thinking about what Yano had said about the scent of the rainbow. The next day, Taguchi asks Yano about the date, and he jokes at first that it was horrible but then tells him that it was actually very nice and Sachi is a very pretty and lively person. He says that Sachi was accompanied by her AD, but that the girl was nothing special. After work, Shoko arranges to go out for dinner with Sachi, but as Shoko is waiting outside the building for Sachi, Yano comes walking by and stops to thank her for the other day. Sachi comes running out to Shoko in her waitress uniform at this point, and Yano looks at her in surprise....
