This 1992 package from the Affinity subsidiary label of the now-defunct Charly Records of the United Kingdom is complete almost to the point of "overkill." The scat-singing duo of Bulee "Slim" Gaillard on guitar and Leroy Elliott "Slam" Stewart on bass produced several unique musical products during the 4-plus years covered by this package.
In addition to their work on the Vocalion and Okeh labels (including numerous alternate takes), ten radio performances are also present. One unique aspect of their work is Slam's often prominent "bowing" of the bass, a technique more associated with classical music than with jive or jazz - but Slam's technique is far from the classical mold. Another prize in this package - Slim was one of the original "jive talkers," and lots of Slim's unique "vout lingo-oroonie" can be heard on several selections.
The 16-page booklet contains an informative essay by Allun Morgan, several pictures, and session details that are quite thorough. An item of note is the fact that Slim & Slam were managed by renowned disc jockey Martin Block.
Lots of toe-tapping good humor in this collection of happy-time small combo jazz/jive music.
Worthy of acquisition, if you can find it.
How would YOU pronounce "VOUT"?? Some rhyme it with "toot," and some rhyme it with "snout."
