This 2001 release from The French Classics (a/k/a Chronological [Jazz] Classics) label marks the first appearance on CD of the 6 tracks which Ms. Carlisle recorded in 1938 for the British Vocalion label, and the first "Una Mae Carlisle" CD appearance of her 1939 recording of I Can't Give You Anything But Love with Fats Waller, formerly available only in Fats Waller compilations to the best of our knowledge. The one disappointment is the omission of the tracks which she recorded in Paris in 1939 with Danny Polo and His Swing Stars, including Montparnasse Jump, however she does not sing on the Danny Polo tracks.
The CD continues with Una Mae's first 4 sessions for the Bluebird label (through May 1, 1941), all of which previously appeared in the BMG France 2 CD set Jazz Tribune No. 64 - The Complete Una Mae Carlisle and John Kirby - 1940 - 1942.
Classics has issued a second volume of Ms. Carlisle's work (through August 30, 1944), which just became available in the United States. The second CD (Classics # 1230) covers the balance of her Bluebird work, and all of her work for Joe Davis except the final session (October 20, 1944). Her complete work for Davis can be found on Una Mae Carlisle, Maxine Sullivan & Savannah Churchill 1942 - 1944. We're anxiously awaiting news of a possible third volume, which could cover her work for Savoy, National, and Columbia, completing her recording career.
Her instrumental cuts with Danny Polo in 1939 appear in the Universal / EmArcy / Gitanes Jazz Productions CD Jazz in Paris - Louis Armstrong and Friends (# 4400139792), not yet available in the United States (try import dealers).
