MyWATERTONAncestors

Welcome !  You are visitor Counter since 9 May 2001

The WATERTONS have a special place in my family history:  they, with the SUTHERLANDS, were the only group where I knew any number of them:  also, I have found (or they have found me), more descendents of earlier generations than with any other family.   My thanks to Peter Raven, Frances Kerner and others now too numerous to list, for their input to the overall picture.

We have formed an informal Email group, where we circulate the results of our research to all the other members:  all with a bona fide interest in the name are invited to Email me for further details.   We have also recently had a Sunday get-together at which 25 direct descendents, most of whom had not met before, attended.

For sometime, it looked as if the WATERTONS had been in the Berkhamsted/Tring area of Hertfordshire for many generations, but recent discoveries have taken them over the Buckinghamshire border into Ashley Green, Chesham before 1800.   Where they came from before 1700 is still unknown, but we have earler names without any reliable source for their roots.  It seems that the Chesham area was a magnet for Methodists, Baptists and other non-conformists, and some connections with these churches have been found

We know that there were other Waterton families in St. Albans, Herts, Caddington and Studham Bedfordshire, in Yorkshire in the Wakefield area, in Lincolshire and in Norfolk.  If you are connected with these families, and have any mystery people who may have wandered to Hertfordshire, please Email me.

Spelling variations include Walterton Worterton, and Watterton:  mis-hearing or illiteracy has also given rise to Worton, Wharton, and several others.

We have been so successful in tracing family connections, in many cases down to the present day, that they can not all be shown in a single Table - in fact, some later generations shown on earlier pages have had to be taken out for space reasons.  The earliest generations traced look like this: the numbers in front of names are generations to help in lioning them up correctly: links are in white
