UBC Intramurals - Game Summaries

Status : We Are The Champions!!!

Date : November 30th, 1998

Opponent : Beta Umlaut

Score : 15-7, 15-5 WIN

This was the most anticipated game ever, for us, and for the other team - it was the finals! Even with lots of school work and some all nighters, everyone came early to warm up. Perhaps this was the key point which contributed to us playing our best game ever...or perhaps we had to perform for our adoring and sexy fans...or perhaps we are just so good! What can I say about bunch of champions? You guys are real stars, you know that? Dom had to take a couple hours from his busy, busy schedule to overcome a sleepless night to play ball...but he didn't just play, he !Dominated! with his powerful hits from outside. Wes overcame a brutally injured hand and put it aside, taping it up so that he wouldn't let the team down. Although it may have beeen painful, he still put his full effort into his sets and hits. Now that's commitment! Other notables are nicely placed sets by Andy and killer hits from James, who came out as our ringer. The star player of the night title goes to Carlos. The most important job of the middle blocker is to stuff their hitters and Carlos read all their hitters like a child's book, rejecting them with confidence and style! What got him the points were two perfectly timed five-twos that went straight down to the floor of the opposing team and an outside hit that got the momentum going for us. We couldn't have asked for a better game and so we ended up taking the precious Gold Medal home. Champions, my friends, we are the champions.

Date : November 24th, 1998

Opponent : Kwakroaches

Score : 15-7, 15-10 Win

This has been the time we've been all waiting for since the season started...Playoffs! Being matched up with the last team in the semi-finals wasn't really fair, for the Kwakroaches, I mean. They couldn't possibly have contended with our big hits, big blocks and smart plays! Honourable mentions go to Carlos for all being up there every time for the block, even when he was out of the play. Also, we got a very nice pancake from Wes who had an injured hand. Too bad the ref was blind and called it a miss. Next time, don't get packed during warm-up! Our dedication to get the ball was shown by Dom and Wes, who collided in a diving save. Keep up the good work. Get ready boys, finals are on Monday night.

Date : November 17th, 1998

Opponent : Beta Umlaut

Score : 15-7, 15-12 Win

We thought this is the team that was going to give us the most challenge but it seems like they didn't bring out their ringers this time. They easily fell prey to our hard hits and big blocks. Even though there was a slight conflict of interest for the ref, Eric Wong (cause he's on our roster), we didn't need any advantage to win such a game.

Date : November 10th, 1998

Opponent : Third Kwak

Score : 15-11, 15-9 Win

This team put up a bit more of a struggle than last time, but they were no match for Dom's thundering hits, Dave and Carlos' impenetrable blocks, Wes's diving saves and Andy's back line hits from offside. So we won.

Date : November 3rd, 1998

Opponent : Kwakroaches

Score : 15-11, 15-6 Win

Justice. Although we were struggling a tad in the first game and kept siding out early in the game, we still won convincingly. We basically controlled the whole second game, giving them very little chances to serve. This was the result of solid defence from Dave's blocks, and Andy's and Carlos' huge digs from the back whenever they had the rare chance of a clean hit going through our blocks. Not only did our defence reign but we had some big hits from Dom and even more precise "smart" hits from Dom, Carlos and Wes that got us lots of points. Save of the night comes from Andy on a long hit...nice try Carlos, but if you want the ball, you need to put in a little more effort!

Opponent : Kwakroaches

Score : 15-4, 11-15, 15-3 Win

Wes Wong finally got a day off work and anticipation was high to play with the whole team present. Honorable mentions of the night was Dom again, hitting as consistently as a hitting machine and Dave, for playing drunk. "Me? No...I'm not drunk...*&%$ YOU! Let's get those Mother@&%#%$!"

Date : October 27th, 1998

Opponent : Beta Umlaut

Score : 9-15, 15-12, 11-15

This was our first double header and finally there is some competition. We can't wait for our rematch.

Date : October 20th, 1998

Opponent : Third Kwak

Score : 15-5, 15-3 Win

This was our first appearance together as a full team and the effect was pretty amazing and that's reflected in the score. Even the sum of their scores was single digits. This time it was the other team that played with a ghost and we would have preferred it if they didn't. Sometimes you need a challenge to make you feel like you've earned it but we can turn this into a good time to practice better plays. X? Sliders? Quicks for everyone? They're yours to call, A & W, and everyone's to hit. Everyone played awesome tonight, maybe it might have been due to our loyal fans! There were some notable plays but I think the score says it all. Like Wes and Dom said, this is the best we've ever played as a team. Well, when you have the best guys on one team...Keep swinging guys, it's a double header next week at an earlier time.

Opponent : Kwakroaches

Score : 15-8, 15-4 Win

Our debut together in a real game was more than we had hoped for. Perhaps our anticipation of playing volleyball together again moved us to play at a higher level, but whatever it was, we Kicked Butt! Even with a ghost, we managed to play our positions and dominate them. We slowly gained momentum in the first set while getting a feel on their abilities and we quickly dispelled Dave's intial worries about their "Big White Guys". By the time we got to around 6 points, we decided to leave them in the dust which means they were still in single digits when we reached 15. The second set was even more of a confirmation to our strength when we only gave them half the points they got in the first set. So what happened? First, we got some strong solid blocks from Dave which shattered their confidence. He then followed up with a few nice cross court kills through their weak attempts at blocking him. Andy contributed with his blocks and hits; way to use the tape Dee! It just shows that timing and vertical can prevail over height! We couldn't have done it without Wes's diving save (how're those ribs?) and his perfect cross court hits. Most notably was a quick set from Andy which Wes converted into a kill. You guys get some brownie points for making it look so good. Oh yeah, and there was this one guy I've never seen play like that before. They call him the Dominator and he earns the title Man of the Night! One question: where did he learn to hit like that? A little harder and you'll pack someone Dom! Maybe next game. Keep up the good work guys!

Date : October 6th, 1998

Opponent : Beta Umlaut

Score : Win by Default

The other team was a no show so we won by default. Not the way we'd like to win but we'll take it. So for fun we played a Tier II team and well, what can I say, we beat them. This indicated that our team is going to be just fine.
