UBC Day of the Longboat

On October 24th and 25th,the annual Day of the Longboat was held at the Jericho Sailing Center. We were told that this was the largest intramural event in North America, with over 2000 people participating. The Canadian Reserves were even called out to help keep watch and shoot the start cannon. You can't tell from the photos, but the weather and the water was cold, but luckily it didn't rain during our heats. Each team consisted of 10 hard paddling people. Our Commerce team proudly had the people shown in the photo below.

The Unsinkables

Here is a photo of our 1998 Commerce Team, the Unsinkables. From left to right, these beautiful people are: Shona, Becky, Ron, Celine, me, Jenner (the Captain, or Skipper!), Gladys, Terry, Joseph, and Priscillia. We raced on Saturday and came third in our heat, with a time of 13:56 for the two km course. We thought that was over for us, since the first team advanced to the finals and the others were based on time, so we all went home ready to rest our pulsating arms of steel. Then we all got a call from Jenner that night telling us that we had made it into the finals! We were all excited at another chance to paddle until our muscles burned in a precariously balanced canoe in freezing cold water! So we all showed up on the beautiful Sunday morning and put all our effort into paddling the canoe as fast as we could. This time, there was no stop at the beach for Terry to pick up the cone and our time was 7:01, placing us in third place, behind two human kinetics teams. Not bad at all for our first try.
